Introduction

Grammar Plus is a series of three grammar practice books

for young learners (7-12) They aim to give systematic

practice and revision of the basic grammar structures of

English through a syllabus which has been carefully

constructed and which corresponds closely to the sylla-

buses employed in many main course books

Many of the texts and exercises centre on the Bakers, an

English family — Mum and Dad, their three children Liz,

John and Jane, and their two pets, Mog the cat and Scamp

the dog Captain Strong, a kind of superman and friend of

the family, appears quite often in Books | and 2, while

many texts in Book 3 are derived from the fictitious FUN

Magazine

Description of the books and exercises

Each book contains about 30 two- or four-page units, the

number of pages reflecting the amount of practice needed

for the language area being presented and practised

The order of phases or activities is the same in each

unit:

+ A presentation text (as a conversation, questionnaire,

strip cartoon, etc.) contextualises the language to be

practised

+ A grammar box highlights the grammar of the unit

through paradigms, or through examples

Explanatory notes usually accompany the grammar

box

Practice exercises consist of at least one text-based

exercise with a variety of others

* Ina four-page unit a second ‘mini-text’ usually

contextualises the main grammar point in conjunction

with a grammar point from a previous unit, or a

further extension of the main grammar area

* The remaining exercises provide further practice and

the unit usually closes on an ‘About you’ or some

other ‘fun’ exercise

All exercises have an example, and space is provided in

all exercises for students to mark or write in answers

How to use the books

There are no set procedures for using the material, but here are just a few suggestions for use in class:

* Preview or revise any vocabulary necessary for the texts or exercises

Remind students or ask them if they have met the grammar of the unit before

* Although the Grammar Plus books are designed primarily as grammar practice books, we recommend that you conduct most exercises orally first in pairs, in groups or as a class before students write them, or before you set them for homework

+ If you devote two lessons to a unit, why not set some later exercises for homework (e.g puzzles, fun exercises) and check them in the next lesson?

What this Teacher’s Guide contains

The notes for each unit provide Aims and a Key to exercises:

The Aims not only highlight the main grammar point or points being practised, but also indicate what other grammatical areas or structures are revised or recycled alongside the main practice point

The Key to exercises contains answers (and where necessary, alternative answers) to all items in all exercises except the ‘About you’ exercise, in which students will clearly be providing personal information

Progress Tests and Final Tests

This Teacher’s Guide contains regular Progress Tests and

a Final Test to accompany each of the three Students”

Books These Tests may be photocopied for classroom

use

Each Progress Test aims to test how well students have mastered the language practised in the previous five or six units, while the Final Test in each Book tests elements from the whole of that book
