correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42
Although management principles have been implemented since ancient times, most management scholars trace the beginning of modern management thought back to the early 1900s, beginning with the pioneering work of Frederick Taylor (1856-1915) Taylor was the first person to study work scientifically
He is most famous for introducing techniques of time and motion study, differential piece rate systems, and for systematically specializing the work of operating employees and managers Along with other pioneers such as Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, Taylor set the stage, labeling his philosophy and methods “scientific management’ At that time, his philosophy, which was concerned with productivity, but which was often misinterpreted as promoting worker interests at the expense of management, was in marked contrast to the prevailing industrial norms of worker exploitation
The time and motion study concepts were popularized by Frank and Lillian Gilbreth The Gilbreths had12 children By analyzing his children’s dishwashing and bed makingchores, this pioneer efficiency expert, Frank Gilbreth, hit on principles whereby workers could eliminate waste motion He was memorialized by two of his children in their 1949 book called “Cheaper by the Dozen”
The Gilbreth methods included using stop watches to time worker movements and special tools (cameras and special clocks) to monitor and study worker performance, and also involved identificati
on of “therbligs” (Gilbreth spelled backwards) -basic motions used in production jobs Many of these motions and accompanying times have been used to determine how long it should take a skilled worker to perform a given job In this way an industrial engineer can get a handle on the approximate time it should take to produce a product or provide a service However, use of work analysis in this way is
Trang 5unlikely to lead to useful results unless all five work dimensions are considered: physical, psychological, social, cultural, and power
Question 36: What is the passage primarily about?
A The limitations of pioneering studies in understanding human behavior
B How time and motion studies were first developed
C The first applications of a scientific approach to understanding human behavior
D The beginnings of modern management theory
Question 37: The word “which” in the passage refers to
Question 38: It can be inferred from the first paragraph that _
A workers welcomed the application of scientific management

C by the early 1900s science had reached a stage where it could be applied to the workplace
D workers were no longer exploited after the introduction of scientific management
Question 39: The word “prevailing” is closest in meaning to
A predominant B broadly accepted C prevalent D common
Question 40: According to the passage, Frank Gilbreth discovered how workers could eliminate waste motion by
A using special tools such as cameras and clocks B using stop watches
C applying scientific management principles D watching his children do their chores
Question 41: According to the passage, the time it takes a skilled worker to perform the motion of a given job can be measured by using _
Question 42: All of the following are true except _
A Scientific management was concerned with productivity
B the beginnings of modern management thought commenced in the 19th century
C Frank Gilbreth’s fame was enhanced by two of his children writing a book
D Analyzing work to increase productivity is not likely to be useful unless all of the dimensions are considered
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50
Most people can remember a phone number for up to thirty seconds When this short amount of time elapses, however, the numbers are erased from the memory How did the information get there in the first place? Information that makes its way to the short term memory (STM) does so via the sensory storage area The brain has a filter which only allows stimuli that is of immediate interest to pass on to the STM, also known as the working memory
There is much debate about the capacity and duration of the short term memory The most accepted theory comes from George A Miller, a cognitive psychologist who suggested that humans can remember
Trang 6approximately seven chunks of information A chunk is defined as a meaningful unit of information, such
as a word or name rather than just a letter or number Modern theorists suggest that one can increase the capacity of the short term memory by chunking, or classifying similar information together By organizing information, one can optimize the STM, and improve the chances of a memory being passed on to long term storage
When making a conscious effort to memorize something, such as information for an exam, many people engage in "rote rehearsal" By repeating something over and over again, one is able to keep a memory alive Unfortunately, this type of memory maintenance only succeeds if there are no interruptions
As soon as a person stops rehearsing the information, it has the tendency to disappear When a pen and paper are not handy, people often attempt to remember a phone number by repeating it aloud If the doorbell rings or the dog barks to come in before a person has the opportunity to make a phone call, he will likely forget the number instantly Therefore, rote rehearsal is not an efficient way to pass information from the short term to long term memory A better way is to practice "elaborate rehearsal" This involves assigning semantic meaning to a piece of information so that it can be filed along with other pre-existing long term memories
Encoding information semantically also makes it more retrievable Retrieving information can be done by recognition or recall Humans can easily recall memories that are stored in the long term memory and used often; however, if a memory seems to be forgotten, it may eventually be retrieved by prompting The more cues a person is given (such as pictures), the more likely a memory can be retrieved This is why multiple choice tests are often used for subjects that require a lot of memorization
Question 43: According to the passage, how do memories get transferred to the STM ?
A They revert from the long term memory B They are filtered from the sensory storage area
C They get chunked when they enter the brain D They enter via the nervous system
Question 44: All of the following are mentioned as places in which memories are stored EXCEPT the:
A STM B long term memory C sensory storage area D maintenance area Question 45: Why does the author mention a dog's bark?
A To give an example of a type of memory

C To prove that dogs have better memories than humans
D To compare another sound that is loud like a doorbell

Question 47: Which of the following is NOT supported by the passage ?
A The working memory is the same as the short term memory
B A memory is kept alive through constant repetition
C Cues help people to recognize information
D Multiple choice exams are the most difficult
Question 48: How do theorists believe a person can remember more information in a short time?
Trang 7Question 49: The author believes that rote rotation is _
A the best way to remember something B more efficient than chunking
C ineffective in the long run D an unnecessary interruption
