People watch puppet shows all around the world.

Puppet Tales

Puppet shows have been popular for many years People in caves may have

used their hands to make shadow figures These were the first puppet shows

The Chinese put on puppet shows

thousands of years ago They used

shadow puppets made from dried animal skins They placed the puppets in front

of a light Their shadows on a screen

told the story

People still perform shadow puppet shows today.

Punch and Judy

Puppets changed over time The

puppets looked more like people The stories the puppets told were often funny One kind of funny puppet show became very popular It is the Punch and Judy show It started hundreds of years ago in Italy It is still performed today

Punch and Judy are husband and wife They are always rude to each other

They make people laugh

Everyone raced to see the Punch and Judy show Music blasted out, telling

people the show was about to begin

Punch and Judy performed in front of

a box They took turns using a stick to chase away bad people However, they

usually hit each other by mistake The

puppets acted very silly The puppeteer used rods to make them move

Punch and Judy shows are still popular in England.

Hand Puppets

Let’s look at three different kinds of puppets:

∙ hand puppets

∙ string puppets

∙ rod puppets

Hand puppets are easy to make You can use bits of wood, cloth, or even a clean, old sock You can even color your hand and just use that People have used hand puppets for thousands of years

You can easily put on

a sock puppet show.

String Puppets

String puppets have strings tied to

each part of the puppet’s body A person makes a string puppet move by pulling

the strings The person stands above the puppet He pulls one string to move the puppet’s head He pulls other strings to move its hands and feet A string puppet

is called a marionette (mehr-ee-uh-NET)

String puppets should

not move in a jerky way.

Rod Puppets

A rod puppet has a thin rod inside its body The rod reaches up to the top

of its head Other thin rods move the puppet’s hands or legs A person makes a rod puppet work by moving the rods

People make rod puppets perform by

moving the rods from below the puppet.

Teachers use puppets to teach lessons.

Puppets Today

Today children can watch puppets on television They can see their favorite

characters each day The familiar

characters help teach children lessons Teachers may use puppets to teach

about feelings

You can put on your own puppet show Choose a favorite story Use

puppets to tell the story Make simple sock puppets and find a vacant room to practice in For the stage, you will need

a table that is not rickety When you finish, just wait for the applause!
