Trang 6Meeting new people
In American society, informality is valued very highly.
People are not judged according to the families they were born into but by how hard they work and how they contribute to the society.
They tend to become informal with each other very quickly. Therefore, it is very common in USA that if you see a person in the eye (if your looks connect with other person) when you are walking down the street or anywhere in a building, to say a friendly phrase. They smile a lot and talk easily to strangers, sometimes share personal stories.
In an intentional first meeting, Americans often have customary handshake.
Americans rarely use both hands to shake. They only embrace in an affectionate way to close friends or family members.
In first meeting, they do not ask about their age, income, religion, politics, and sexuality
Trang 7The American concept of friendship
Fluid and dynamic.
U.S. friendship is typified by warmth, informality, and other signs of acceptance, even toward comparative strangers.
People from other cultures become confused because those whom they would consider mere acquaintances are called "friends" by U.S. Americans and because the warm manner of U.S. Americans leads them to expect a degree of commitment that the U.S. Americans do not feel and would find difficult to accept.
