Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a gigantic
sculpture carved into the granite of Mount Rushmore
near Keystone, South Dakota, in the United States
This epic monument displays the faces of four
American presidents: George Washington, Thomas
Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham
Lincoln The beautiful Black Hills provide a
magnificent surrounding for the sculpture
Rushmore’s real creator was a man called Doane
Robinson In 1923, he had a vision of a massive
monument, but he imagined something quite
different He dreamed of giant statues of local
western heroes such as Buffalo Bill, Lewis and Clark
and the Sioux warriors Most people thought his
idea was ludicrous and impossible Nevertheless,
he managed to get the attention of a senator who agreed to help Robinson with the project
In 1924, a famous American sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, accepted the job on one condition:
to change the regional heroes and select four presidential figures The sculptor began to work in the mountain three years later He had to employ more than 400 workers, mostly unemployed miners
Most of the sculpture was made with the help of pneumatic drills and dynamite The creation of the monument took 14 years to complete Sadly, Borglum could not see it in all its glory because he died before its completion His son, Lincoln, was in charge of refining the sculpture and completing the delicate work Mount Rushmore National Memorial has become a popular place to visit by tourists all over the world, a truly American icon
