Although speech is the most advanced form of communication, there are many ways of communicating without using speech Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may be found in every known culture The basic function of a signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it attracts attention, as, for example, the dots and dashes of a telegraph circuit Coded to refer to speech, the potential for communication is very great Less adaptable to the codification of works, signs also contain meaning in and of themselves A stop sign or a barber pole conveys meaning quickly and conveniently Symbols are more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the receiver’s cultural perceptions In some cultures, applauding

in a theater provides performers with an auditory symbol of approval Gestures such as waving and handshaking also communicate certain cultural messages

Although signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they do have a major disadvantage They usually

do not allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver As a result, means of communication intended to be used for long distances and extended periods are based upon speech Radio, television, and the telephone are only a few

It has long been known that when exposed to light under suitable conditions of temperature and moisture, the green parts of plants use carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen to it These exchanges are the opposite of those that occur in respiration The process is called photosynthesis In photosynthesis, carbohydrates are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water by the chloroplasts of plan cells in the presence of light In most plants, the water used in photosynthesis is absorbed from the soil by the roots and translocated through the xylem

of the root and stem to the leaves Except for the usually small percentage used in respiration, the oxygen released in the process diffuses out of the leaf into the atmosphere through the stomates Oxygen is the product of the reaction For each molecule of carbon dioxide used, one molecule of oxygen is released A summary chemical equation for photosynthesis is:

6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2

As a result of this process, radiant energy from the sun is stored as chemical energy In turn, the chemical energy is used to decompose carbon dioxide and water The products of their decomposition are recombined into a new compound, which is successively built up into more and more complex substances After many intermediate steps, sugar is produced At the same time, a balance of gases is preserved in the atmosphere

Question 21: Which title best expresses the ideas in this passage?
