7. A sample review : (Bài phê bình)

In the realistic critical literature from 1930 to 1945, I like “Lao Hac” by Nam Cao best

‘Lao Hac’ is considered a literary work with high value of reality criticism over the Vietnamese society before 1945 This story reflects the poverty and miseries of the poor, especially farmers who were attached to their lands and villages

The main character of the story is Mr Hac, a very poor farmer, whose boy lived and worked far from the family He had a dog and it was his only close friend Like other people at that time, Mr Hac was so poor that he couldn’t support himself Having nothing to eat to survive, he had to sell his only dog for a little money, but

it didn’t help him continue his long life

When thinking about his child, he didn’t want to sell his house or his small piece of land He found it impossible to suffer such miserable life any more In the depth of despair, he killed himself

The more I read Lao Hac, the more I bore a grudge against the French colonialists and feudalists together with their henchmen’s oppression and exploitation of Vietnamese poor peasants and I also understand Mr Hac’s noble sacrifice originated in his love for his son Had Nam Cao found an active way of escape for his characters, his masterpiece would have had a deeper influence on the readers

The second problem was that the hot water system didn’t work I phoned the hotel manager’s office but nobody arrived At last, I had to boil some water because I was used to taking hot baths

Last week an exhibiton of paintings by famous artists was organized by the cultural and Artistic Association at the Art Gallery Being very fond of painting , I myself went there early in the morning

When I arrived, the Art Gallery had been packed with people Groups by groups of people were entering the exhibition halls, their faces were radiant with joy

On the walls, different patterns of morden paintings were hung : charcoal drawings, pencil drawings and oil paintings were on display Most of them reflect daily activities and some of them bring us into a world of imagination and dreams

An oil painting by Lu Tong Dao portraying a scene at twilight in the country attracted my attention best The painting did remind me of my happy boyhood in

my native village where I lived my happiest days in my life

The exhibition offered me precious minutes of relaxtion and enriched my imagination It brought me back into my happy and peaceful past, full of love and tenderness, among my dear ones
