Mount Tiantai in Zhejiang Province of China is a mountain with scenic landscape and

historical relics However, it was little-known and far away from cities until the fourth

century Sun Chuo (314－371), a famous poet and notable literatus in the Eastern Jin

Dynasty (317－420), highlighted the sceneries of Mt Tiantai in his famous rhapsody

“You Tiantai Shan fu” (Tour of Mt Tiantai), which, according to extant literature,

revealed not only the beauty of the mountain to the world, but also paths to aesthetic

perceptions of Chinese natural landscape (shanshui) Since the fifth century, Sun Chuo’s

literary creation of Mt Tiantai has generated continual interests among the literati and its

sceneries have attracted countless tourists to experience them in various ways even until

today Mt Tiantai appeared in poems, essays, paintings, gardens and even stage

performances repeatedly By the Tang Dynasty (618-907) at the latest, it had been

described as the ideal natural landscape in many literary works

This thesis focuses on the beauty of Mt Tiantai and and its aesthetic expressions Such

expressions form a family of aesthetic discourses which constitute the discursive Mt

Tiantai relative to the actual mountain The thesis discusses the discursive Mt Tiantai

from its three related aspects of natural landscape, culture and religions It analyzes the

intertextual relationships between different forms of aesthetic discourse such as poems,

essays, paintings, and gardens Based on the analysis of Mt Tiantai as a case study, some

structural rules of Chinese aesthetic discourse of natural landscape will be indicated

作 为 地 方 的 天 台 山 ， 不 仅 是 审 美 的 对 象 ， 亦 是 一 种 观 念 、 态 度 ， 指 导

世 人 开 展 山 水 审 美 。 数 量 巨 大 ， 形 式 多 样 的 美 感 话 语 已 经 将 天 台 山 塑

造 成 稳 定 、 成 熟 的 东 亚 文 化 意 象 。

南 齐 征 虏 将 军 、 南 清 太 守 司 徒 左 长 史 、 扬 州 录 事 沈 约 造 ， 扬 州 刺

史 膘 骑 记 室 倪 圭 之 书 。 据 记 称 ， 永 泰 中 定 居 桐 柏 岭 ， 因 地 之 名 建 馆 曰

“ 金 庭 宫 ”。 命 置 道 士 十 人 而 已 ，“ 为 之 首 ”， 盖 道 士 自 叙 之 言 ， 非 约 所

撰 ， 其 谓 造 之 者 ， 疑 如 后 世 所 立 碑 之 类 尔 。 碑 以 永 元 三 年 （ 501 ） 立 。3
