LESSON PLAN Unit 10: Conservation Writing skill: A letter of invitation

1 Class description: Level: Students in grade 10th in a normal class

3 Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the Ss will able to write a letter of

invitation using the cues provided

4 Teaching aids: Textbook, visual aid, handout

5 Problems: Ss may not be familiar with expressions used in an invitation;

therefore, T should explain and make them remember

6 Procedure:

Warm-up

(5’) - Prepares 4 set of words, each of which consists of 9 letter- shuffled words related

to a letter of invitation

- Divides the class into four groups of 5

- Gives each group a set of words and asks

them to rearrange the letters to form

correct words

- The winner will be the group with the

quickest and correct answer

- Listen to T’s guide

- Work in group

- One representative of each group presents their answer

- Correct answer:

1 Salutation

2 Invitation

3 Address

4 Reason

5 Arrangement

6 Event

7 Accept

8 Confirmation

9 Signature

Pre-writing

(10’)

- Asks some questions and corrects if

necessary

+ Have you ever written a letter of

invitation? On which occasion?

+ What expressions do you use to invite

someone?

- Introduces writing a letter of invitation

to Ss by giving a sample (enclosed)

- Make Ss exploit the model and give

a standard format of a simple letter of

- Answer the questions by writing on the board

+ On birthday party or festival + Some expressions:

Can you…?

Would you like…?

Shall we…?

- Read the sample and exploit it

+ The address of the writer as well as the

date of the letter is at the top right corner

In an informal letter, the address of the

receiver is not needed

+ The salutation: “Dear” plus the first

name of the receiver,

+ The first part: the purpose of the letter,

giving the invitation

+ The next part: detailed arrangement:

place, time, what to prepare, who to

come…

+ The last part: expressing the hope that

invitation will be accepted and asking for

a confirmation, ending with the signature

Task 1: Matching ( 5’)

Instruction: You are going to write out the

sentences by matching the first half in A

with the suitable half/ halves in B

- T asks Ss to look at column A and give

the form of the verb in each of the

structures:

+ Let’s + infinitive without ‘to’

+ Why don’t you + inf without ‘to’

+ Would you like + inf + to

+ Do you feel like + V-ing

+ Can you + inf without ‘to’

+ How about + V-ing

+ Shall we + inf without ‘to’

+ Are you free + inf + to

- Asks Ss to work in pairs to do the task,

reminding them that one expression in A

can go with more than one expression in

B and they should write the sentences

- Asks Ss to exchange their answers and

other pairs

- Calls on one pair to give their answers

and other pairs to add any other ideas

- Feedbacks and gives correct answers

Task 2: Letter completion ( 8’)

Instruction: You are required to fill each

blank in these invitation letters with a

suitable expression provided in task 1 For

each blank you can have more than one

answer

- Asks Ss to read through the letters to

- Listen to the teacher

- Do the task in pairs

- Exchange answers with other pairs

- Expected answers:

letter 1:

+ First, read the letter

+ Look at the incomplete sentence and

pay attention to the form of the verb that

follows the blank For example, in letter

one the verb form is infinitive with ‘to’

( … to join us?)

+ Read the expression in task 1 and find

the suitable expression(s) to fill the blank

In the first letter, we can fill the blank

with “Would you like” or “Are you free”

- Asks Ss to work in pairs to do the same

with the other two letters

- Asks Ss to exchange answers with other

pairs

- Calls on one pair to give their answers

and other pairs to add any other ideas

- Feedbacks and gives correct answers

Task 3: Writing and invitation letter

based on cues (12’)

Instruction: You are going to write an

invitation in which Nam invites Lam to

spend a weekend with him, using the cues

provided

- Reminds them that they should use all

the language items provided together with

other items to produce meaningful and

grammatically correct sentences Also, Ss

should use capitalized letters and

punctuation marks properly

- Asks Ss to write the letter

- While Ss writer the letter, T goes around

to observe and provide help

- Asks Ss to exchange their letter with

another student for peer correction

- Goes around and collects mistakes and

errors

Writes Ss’ typical errors on the board and

elicits self and peer correction T provides

correction only when Ss are not able to

correct the errors

- Gives general comments on the letters

gives suggested letter

- Exchange answers with other pairs

- Expected answers:

- Do the task individually

- Exchange the letter with another for peer correction
