UNIT 7 SAVING ENERGY

(Period 6th – 10th) Lesson 1: Getting started + Listen and read Lesson 2: Speak, Listen

Period: 6 Lesson 1: GETTING STARTED + LISTEN AND READ

I/- Aim:

By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to understand the dialogue about the ways to save energy: water

II/- Language contents:

1/- Grammar:

- Suggest + V-ing

- Review: Adverb clauses of result ‘so’

2/- Vocabulary: water bill, enormous, plumber, pipe, crack, drip, turn on/off, faucet

III/- Techniques: Pairwork, Ask and answer, Brainstorming.

IV/- Teaching aids: Pictures.

V/- Procedure:

1 Warm up (5 mins)

- T gives a situation: Now, it’s o’clock, I think

we should turn off the lights.

- Ss answer: OK/ All right/ That’s good idea.

- T introduces the new lesson:

+ How can the lights be bright?

+ How can the electric fan run?

 depend on electricity

- T asks Ss list some energy

- T presents the new lesson

2 Presentation (10 mins)

- T asks Ss to look at the pictures and talk with the

partner to make a list of things the family could do

to save energy (Pair work)

- Then T introduces the next part: they’re some

suggestions about saving energy, now listen to the

* Getting started:

1/ How about turning off the TV?

2/ I think we should turn off the faucet

energy

conservation between Mrs Mi with Mrs Ha, her

neighbor.

- But first, T supplies the new words

Baths use twice as much water as showers, so I

suggest taking showers

 New words:

- bill (n):  water bill (n):

- enormous (adj.):

- plumber (n):

- pipe (n):

- crack (n):

- drip (v):

- turn on/off/:

- faucet (n):  dripping faucet (n):

 Grammar:

- Adverb clauses of result: so

- S + suggest + V-ing

Ex: I suggest turning off the electric fan

3 Practice (21 mins)

- T introduces: Mrs Ha is talking to Mrs Mi about

the water her family uses this month.

- T plays the disk twice

- Then T asks Ss to practice the dialogue with the

partner (Pair work) (about 2 minutes)

- After that, T calls some pairs to practice the

dialogue aloud

? Why does Mrs Mi suggest taking showers

instead of baths? (- Because baths use twice as

much water as showers.)

? Who will Mrs Ha get to check the pipes?

(-Mrs Ha will get a plumber to check the pipes.)

- Later T asks Ss to read the dialogue again and

decide these statements are True or False Then

correct the False statements (about 5 minutes).

- Ss present their ideas

- T corrects

* Listen and read:

a) Practice the dialogue

b) True or False? Check () the boxes Then

correct the False statements

3  Mrs Ha says she’ll follow Mrs Mi’s advice to have a plumber check the pipes

later

4  Mrs Mi suggests getting a plumber to check cracks in the pipes  

4 Production (7 mins.)

- T asks Ss to answer the questions

1/ Why is Mrs Ha worried?

2/ How much money does she pay for the water

bill?

* Key:

1/ She is worried because her recent water bill

is enormous

2/ She pays 200,000 dongs

3/ How can Mrs Ha reduce the amount of water

her family uses?

3/ - Have a plumber check the pipes

- Taking showers instead of baths

5 Homework (2 mins)

- Learn by heart the new words and the dialogue

- Prepare Lesson 2: Speak., Listen
