Printing and PDFs with artboards

When you print an Illustrator CS4 document, you can now choose which artboards you would

like to print; you can also reverse the order, or skip blank artboards You can also turn off the

Artboard feature altogether by selecting Ignore Artboards You will notice that you can now

preview artboards individually in the Preview panel as well

When you save to PDF, there are also choices for which artboards you would like to save as

a PDF

Choose which pages you want to save to the PDF format.

The new Appearance panel

New to CS4 is the ability to control the visibility of everything in the Appearance panel

Previously, items such as Stroke and Fill did not have an visibility icon ( ) to the left of them in the Appearance panel You now have more control than ever! Even when you apply a Graphic Style, you can now control the visibility of Fills, Strokes, Transparency, and Eff ects This is for both top-level items and nested items, such as an eff ect applied to a specifi c stroke

When you save artwork to previous versions of Illustrator, the visual appearance is preserved, while hidden attributes are removed The hidden attributes are also removed when you print,

export, or save to a PDF, unless the Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities option is checked.

You can now control the visibility of attributes inside the Appearance panel.

Enhanced Gradient tool

The new Gradient tool is more intuitive than ever Instead of having to use the Gradient panel

to control color stops in a gradient, you can now select the Gradient tool ( ), hover over the

object, and get gradient information as you mouse over You can control the start and end points

of a gradient, by dragging on either side of the line The smaller, fi rst black circle on the left,

with a white center, lets you control the length and orientation of the gradient; the larger black

circle with a white center, lets you move the whole gradient; the diamond on the end lets you

resize the whole gradient proportionally If you double-click one of the color stops, the Color

panel appears, where you can control the color and—new in CS4—the transparency of a color

This means that you can fi nally make vignette-like gradients over images or objects (Gradients

that contain transparency were not possible prior to CS4.) If you need to make a new color

stop, just Alt-drag (Windows) or Option-drag (Mac OS) a color stop

CS4’s new Gradient tool ends the old issue of multiple panel management You no longer need

both the Gradient panel and the Color panel to create and edit a gradient; you can now edit the

gradient right on an object!

Double-click a color stop to change both the color and

transparency of a gradient color stop.

You will fi nd additional new features introduced throughout the book Some, like the new

features introduced in this lesson, will have a signifi cant impact on how you create artwork in

Adobe Illustrator, and some will just make working in Adobe Illustrator a little easier and a lot

more comfortable
