Yellow fever, a serve disease transmitted by mosquitoes, is characterised by general aches, high fever, haemorrhage, vomiting, fatigue, loss of appetite, and yellowness of the skin It was first observed in Boston in 1658, and the final outbreak in the United States in New Orleans in

It was believed at first that yellow fever, yellowjack, as it is sometimes called, came from Central or South America, but scientific investigations now indicate a West African origin The current theory is that the Aedes aegypti, infected with the yellow fever virus, came to the New World aboard slave ships The female Aegypti bit humans on the ships, and the infectious cycle was underway Until 1881 many causes of yellow fever were suspected , such as filth in the streets or even noxious gases But then a Cuban, Dr Carlos Finaly, proposed the theory of propagation of the disease by means of the mosquito
