Practice Tests for PET contains four complete tests to

help students prepare for the University of Cambridge

Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) Preliminary

English Test (PET), which was revised in 1996 The

book offers thorough practice in all the written and oral

papers of the test and helps students to develop the

skills they need in order to pass the exam

A Teacher's Edition of Practice Tests for PET is also

available, and contains all the Students' Book material

with over-printed answers, as well as tapescripts of the

recorded material for the Listening Paper and suggested

guidelines for the Speaking Paper Audio CDs and

cassettes with the recorded material for the Listening

Paper accompany the Practice Test books

About PET

PET, which is the second level in the UCLES five-level

series of examinations, tests competence in all four

language skills (Reading Writing, Listening and

Speaking) and its language level is approximately two

thirds of the way towards that of the First Certificate in

English Candidates who pass PET are expected to be at

the Council of Euro e Threshold Level, which requires

approximately 350 hours of English language stud

At this l eve l l earne r s s hould be able to cope with the

language used in a range of everyday situations in their

own or a foreign country and communicate satisfactorily

with both native and non-native speakers of English

PET Format

The kinds of texts that the learner should be able to deal with at this level include street signs and public notices, forms, posters, brochures, city guides and simple instructions, as well as informal letters, newspaper and magazine articles, features and weather forecasts The types of listening texts that the learner should be able to understand are public announcements at sporting events or pop concerts, and instructions given by police

or customs officials PET candidates should be able to not only pick out facts but also to understand opinions, attitudes, moods and wishes

The PET syllabus is designed to ensw·e that the test reflects the use of language in real life and corresponds

to a highly communicative approach to learning English, which nonetheless recognises the need for clarity and accuracy

Candidates for PET have to write their answers on

separate answer sheets, OMRs (Optical Mark Readers) for Paper 1 (Reading and Writing) and Paper 2 (Listening) In Part 3 of the Writing paper, candidates can use the question paper to write a draft of their answer, but they have to transfer the written task to

the OMR sheet within the time allowed For the

Listening Test, extra time is allowed for candidates to transfer their answers onto the OMR sheets Sample answer sheets for all the papers are provided at the

back of the book

In PE'l' there are four skills comp nents in three Papers as shown below:

Paper 1 (1 hour 30 mins)

Paper 2 (3 0 mins + 12 mins transfer time)

Paper 3 ( 10 mins approx )

• Look at the statements below about fighting flu

• Read the text on the next page to decide if each statement is correct or incorrect

• If it is correct, mark A on your answer sheet

• If it is not correct, mark B on your answer sheet Part 3

0 A B Example answer: - c:::::::J

11 Scientists have found a cure for the flu

12 You can have a flu jab at your local hospital

13 If you have a flu jab, you have a 60-80% chance of not getting the flu

14 Taking vitamin C when you have the flu will make you feel much better

15 Cod liver oil is delicious

16 You should make tea from eucalyptus

17 You can buy herbal tea in a health food store

18 If you feel stressed, you have less chance of getting the flu

19 In total, you should exercise for at least twenty minutes every week

20 Eating lots of fruit and vegetables will help you avoid getting the flu

Trang 30

R eading

Every year, thousands of people suffer from the flu and , unfortunately ,

this looks likely to continue Although scientists are still trying to

understand the flu , there are some ways to avoid getting it However ,

there is no guarantee of a cure

The flu jab

The flu jab is one possible way to

prevent flu The injection can be

given by your local doctor

or at the hospital Virus

proteins are injected into

the blood , your body

recognises them as

Herbs and homeopathy

Garlic

Garlic contains allicin , which

fights viruses and bacteria

These are a l so good for foreign and makes antibodies The

antibodies are then ready to fight

the flu virus if you are unlucky

enough to catch it R esearch

shows that, on average, having a

flu jab reduces your chances of

getting flu by 60-80 percent Some

people feel tired or experience flu

-like symptoms for a few days after

injection, you could

try taking vitamin

supplements

Taking vitamin C when you already

have the flu won ' t cure you Vitamin C is effective ,

however , if you take it before you get the flu It

can help to reduce the length and severity of the

illness

It may taste unpleasant , but it is ful l of vitamins A

and D , which help fight germs

By choosing a healthy lifestyle ,

you will reduce stress and help your body protect itself from the flu Exercise

Make sure you do some k i nd

of exerc i se three times a week for at least 20 minutes

Nutrition

Don ' t eat fried or smoked food

Try to eat as much fresh fruit and vegetables as possible - ,

at least five portions a day Choose colourful vegetables like carrots , broccol i and red peppers Eat foods which are r i ch i n z i nc , such as

potatoes , nuts , liver and wholewheat bread
