How do I change the default cropping when

I add a clip?

You can change how iMovie crops a frame when

you add a clip to a project.

1 Click File and then Project Properties.

2 Click Timing in the dialog that appears.

3 Click the Initial Video Placement menu.

● You can fit the entire clip in the frame This may

add black borders to the top and bottom or sides

of the clip

● You can fill the entire frame, which may crop the

clip depending on the aspect ratios of the clip and

iMovie crops the clip

iMovie adjusts the crop area

● You can click to preview

the edited clip

5 Click Done.

You can press to exit the

Crop tool without cropping

How do I turn the black bordering on and

off in the Crop tool?

You can switch between the Fit and Crop modes in

the Crop tool to turn black bordering on and off

You can see such bordering in the preview window

1 Click Fit to fit the entire clip in the frame and add

black borders if needed These borders are called

letterboxes on the top and bottom and pillarboxes

on the sides

You can click Crop to fill the entire frame with the

clip This may crop your clip depending on the

aspect ratios of the clip and the project

iMovie saves the change

iMovie rotates the clip

● You can click to preview

the edited clip

4 Click Done.

You can press to exit the

How do I add a title over a clip?

A title can appear over the content of a

clip instead of over a background.

1 Click and drag the title onto a clip

instead of before or after it

● iMovie adds the title over the clip

2 Click here to view and edit the title in

the viewer

How do I control how a title fades in and out?

You can open the Inspector to control fading and other

title properties.

1 Double-click the title icon

The Inspector opens

2 Click to manually adjust the fade in and out ( changes

to )

3 Click and drag the slider to change the fade duration

How do I check the spelling in my titles and

credits?

You can use the built-in spell checker to have

iMovie highlight misspellings and suggest

alternatives.

1 Click a title or credits icon

● iMovie displays the content in the viewer and

underlines words that it cannot find in its

dictionary

2 Click Edit, Spelling, and then Show Spelling and

Grammar.

3 Click a suggestion and then click Change to

replace a word

iMovie adds the credits and

background to the project

● You can click and drag the edge of

the credits icon to change the

duration
