I Objectives

By the end of the lesson students will able to:

- develop such reading micro-skills as scanning for specific ideas and guessing meaning

in context

- use the information they have read to talk about New York City

II Time: One period of 45 minutes.

III Students’ level: 10th grade students

IV Class size: 48 students

V Teaching aids:

- Textbook, handouts, board, extra boards

VI Anticipated problems:

- Students may not have sufficient vocabulary to read and talk about the topic, so teacher should be ready to help them

VII Procedure:

Time Steps Work

arrangement 3’ WARM-UP

-T shows a picture of Statue of Liberty and asks Ss to answer some

questions relating to this statue:

+ Do you know what it is?

+ Where is it? (in which country or city)

-T gives Ss more information about Statue of Liberty: It is in New York

Harbour This statue is the symbol of freedom It was made by the

French in 1884

- T introduces the topic of the lesson: Today, we are going to read about

New York (it is one of biggest cities in the world)

Individual work

12’ BEFORE YOU READ

- T can explain Ss the meaning of the places

- T gets Ss work in pairs and match the pictures on page 156 of the

Individual work, the whole class

textbook with the correct places.

- T checks T might want to ask checking questions like “What can you see in the picture 1?”, “what about picture 2”, “What makes you think it

is the UN Headquarters?”

- T gives Ss some information about these places (T may speak in Vietnamese ):

1 The Empire State Building: It is an office building in Manhattan, New York City, which was put up in 1931 It is the tallest building in the world with a height of 381m and 102 floors

2 The United Nations Headquarters is a distinctive complex in New York City that has served as the official headquarters of the United Nations since its completion in 1952 It is located in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of Manhattan Though it is in New York City, the land occupied by the United Nations Headquarters is considered

“international territory”

3 Central Park: is an urban park that occupies about 1.2 square miles in the heart of Manhattan in New York City With about 25 million visitors annually, Central Park is the most visited city park in the United States

4 Times Square: ia located in the central Manhattan in New York City It’s famous for its Broadway theaters, cinemas, supersigns Times Square, nicknamed “the crossroads of the world” It’s one of those places that make New York a city that never sleeps

- T guides Ss to answer two questions about New York in the page 157 + T may divide the class into small groups of 4 and write down as much information about New York that they know as possible

+T might use the following network to help Ss generate ideas T may explain new words in this network

+T might distribute Ss the handouts of some suggested answers

• Population: 7 million people live in the city, and 19 million live

in the whole metropolitan region

• Famous places: Statue of liberty, Wall Street, Empire State

• Area: 946 km2, the largest city in the USA

-T calls on 2 groups to present their information

WHILE YOU READ

-T introduces the passage: Now, we read about New York city, the

largest city in the USA

Task1

-Before doing this task, T should ask Ss to read through the text and

mark the lines of the passage by numbers T may write the words in

column A in the task 1 on the board

- T tells Ss to study the phrases in column B Ss can guess parts of

speech of the words mentioned in column A For example, “mix with”

they may need to supply a verb

- T asks Ss to locate and read around these words so that they can guess

their meanings For example:” metropolitan region” found in line 11

- T gets Ss work individually

-T checks the answers with the whole class

-T gets Ss read through all the 5 statements in task 2 and identify the

Task 3

-T should give Ss some strategies:

+First, Ss should skim the five questions to understand them

• Ss underline the key words to decide what information they need

to find in the text

+ Then Ss go back to the passage and locate the key words in the

passage They read around these words to find the correct answers

-T calls on some Ss to write their answers on the board and ask them to

explain their choices

-T gives the correct answers

Answer:

- T may introduces about Wall Street, Broadway theater district (t can

show pictures about two these places)

1 Wall Street: Wall Street is a street in Lower Manhattan, New York

City.It is the first permanent home of the New York Stock Exchange

Nowadays, Several major U.S stock and other exchanges remain

headquartered on Wall Street

2 Broadway theater: refers to theatrical performances presented in one

of the 40 large professional theaters with 500 seats The Broadway

Theatre district is a popular tourist attraction in New York City

-T calls on 2 Ss to give their ideas

Group work

3’ WRAPPING UP

-T summarizes the main points of the lessons

- For homework, T asks Ss to learn by heart the new vocabulary and

makes sentences with them
