Trang 9Leadership styles play a crucial role in shaping both organizational success andindividual career development They reflect how leaders direct, motivate, and influenceothers to achieve common goals From fostering collaboration to driving innovation, leadership styles such as autocratic, democratic, and coaching have distinct characteristicsand impacts on the workplace Similarly, career development is a continuous journey oflearning, growing, and seizing opportunities to achieve professional goals The intersectionbetween leadership and career paths is significant, as leadership styles influenceorganizational culture, employee satisfaction, and career progression Understanding howdifferent leadership styles affect career development can help individuals not only thrive intheir roles but also make informed decisions about adapting their own leadership approaches
to achieve success

II. POPULAR LEADERSHIP STYLES AND HOW THEY
INFLUENCE CAREER DEVELOPMENT
A Popular leaderships styles & Their impact on Career Development
1 Autocratic Leadership
a Characteristics of Authoritarian leadership
Autocratic leaders typically make choices based on their ideas and judgments andrarely accept advice from followers Autocratic leadership involves absolute, authoritariancontrol over a group
Like other leadership styles, the autocratic style has both some benefits and someweaknesses While those who rely on this approach too heavily are often seen as bossy ordictator-like, this level of control can have benefits and be useful in certain situations. When and where the authoritarian style is most useful can depend on factors such asthe situation, the type of task the group is working on, and characteristics of the teammembers
Typical characteristics of autocratic leadership:
Allows little or no input from group members:
In this model, the leader takes on full responsibility for every decision, sets thedirection, and chooses the methods without providing explanations or rationales to the team. This approach is grounded in the belief that the leader alone possesses the expertise orauthority needed to make the best choices, which often limits transparency within the team
By withholding the reasons behind decisions, the leader emphasizes obedience and swiftaction over discussion and understanding Although this can streamline operations andensure that tasks are carried out exactly as instructed, it may lead to a lack of trust or buy-infrom team members They may feel disconnected or undervalued, as their insights andperspectives are not considered in the decision-making process
Tends to create highly structures and very rigid environments:
Trang 12This approach establishes clear hierarchies and strictly defined roles, with little roomfor deviation or creativity from team members The leader enforces rules and procedures thatmust be followed precisely, which helps maintain control and ensure consistency inoperations This structure can enhance efficiency and predictability, especially in high-stakes
or crisis situations
Provides leaders with the ability to dictate work methods and processes:
Autocratic leadership provides leaders with the ability to dictate work methods andprocesses, granting them complete authority over how tasks are approached and completed.Leaders in this model specify each step, leaving little room for individual interpretation orinput from team members This top-down control allows the leader to ensure that workaligns precisely with their vision and standards, reducing the chance of errors or deviations
Discourages creativity and out-of-the-box thinking:
Team members are often expected to follow precise instructions without questioning
or exploring alternative approaches This rigid framework can suppress original ideas, asemployees may feel their suggestions are unwelcome or irrelevant By discouraging creativeinput, autocratic leaders may miss out on valuable insights that could improve processes orspark innovation
Leaves the group feeling like they aren’t trusted with decisions or important tasks:
By centralizing authority and limiting the team’s involvement in decision-making,leaders convey an implicit message that they don’t trust team members’ abilities orjudgment This lack of trust can impact morale, as individuals may feel undervalued andsidelined, unable to contribute to the group’s direction or goals Over time, this can foster asense of dependency on the leader for guidance, eroding confidence and initiative within theteam
b Example
Steve Jobs is a prime example of an entrepreneur with an autocratic leadership style
To achieve tremendous success, he not only had innate talent but also possessed a distinctiveand remarkable leadership style He was dubbed the most powerful man in business SteveJobs transformed Apple into one of the world’s leading tech companies with numerousachievements
Trang 13 On the positive side:
Authoritarian but appropriate:
In an environment with many talented people, people tend to promote their ego ForApple, this most famous brand also encounters such situations Therefore, the autocraticleadership style is completely suitable Steve Jobs's decisiveness will help him make quick, decisive decisions, and handle problems promptly On the employee side, debates orconflicts will not be able to last long or cause internal conflicts Because, as soon as the finaldecision is made, everyone must concentrate to the maximum to complete the task
Centralization of power:
In 1996, Apple faced difficulties when large inventories affected the company'soperations At this time, thanks to Steve Jobs' decisive leadership style, power wascentralized Unity and solidarity helped the corporation overcome this period of crisis
Creating the necessary pressure on employees to improve the quality of work:
His leadership style created the necessary pressure to help Apple employees Itmotivated them to constantly explore new initiatives and complete work on time When theproduct had problems, Steve Jobs always required employees to take responsibility andhandle it immediately From there, Apple's team formed a focused, professional andeffective working style
On the negative side:
Trust problems:
Autocratic leaders like to control everything Because of that, they tend tomicromanage their employees, discouraging their input and feedback This causes trustproblems within the company and ultimately hurts productivity If leaders are not asinspiring as Steve Jobs, they will run into trust problems and even lose many greatemployees
Damages creativity:
An autocratic leader is the only one in charge of any process that eventually damagescreativity This leadership style doesn’t offer enough space for employees to let theircreativity run free Usually, employees end up keeping their ideas to themselves In the longrun, it affects the employees’ creativity and productivity
Trang 14 Dependence:
Autocratic leadership creates dependency in the workplace Employees will needfeedback from their leader before taking further steps Especially when a company is soldand such a leader leaves, the company often is in huge trouble If one company is built onthe total dependence of one person, that person’s fate determines the fate of the company
2 Democratic leadership
a Characteristics of democratic leadership
Democratic leadership means the leader empowers subordinates to participate in thedecision-making process, which in short, means government by the people
Leaders who embrace the democratic style of leadership often possess the followingcharacteristics:
Promote creativity:
Leaders who practice shared leadership have faith in their teams' ability to come upwith answers and ideas Because of this trust, teams are inspired to collaborate in novel wayswithout micromanaging the company
Inclusive:
Democratic leaders want all team members to be involved Everyone comes to thetable when it’s time to make a decision This approach reduces power struggles and makesteam members feel valued
Collaborative:
Democratic leadership, as opposed to other leadership philosophies, promotesteamwork Workers cannot simply follow their leader’s orders to complete tasks Rather, they must solve problems on their own, even though they know their leader will acceptaccountability if something goes wrong
Trust-building:
Most importantly, participatory leaders have faith in their staff to complete tasks. They adhere to Douglas McGregor's Theory Y model, an optimistic approach predicated onthe idea that employees are self-motivated, find their work gratifying, and possess thecapacity for independent problem-solving
