Trang 72 BODY 2.1 Chess Boxing
*History:
Chess Boxing is sport that combines Boxing and Chess The basic idea in this sport is to combine two disciplines - one intellectually demanding - into a unified sport that requires athletes to demonstrate their level of proficiency high in both subjects The governing bodies of this sport are the World Chess Boxing Organization (WCBO) and the World Chess Boxing Association (WCBA)
The concept of Chess Boxing was first coined in the 1979 film "Mystery of Chessboxing” directed
by Joseph Kuo (although the chess genre in the film is chess) In the same year, the first world championship match was held in Amsterdam[6]
with the Boxing Association of the Netherlands
as well as the Dutch Chess Federation and under the sponsored by the World Chess Organization (WCBO) established in Berlin shortly before In
Trang 8this match, Iepe Rubingh won because his opponent, Jean Louis Veenstra, ran out of time in round 11 (chess)
2005 - 2008: The first tournaments
« October 1, 2005: The first European Championship takes place in Berlin

« November 2007: The first world championship fight in the light heavyweight division was fought between Frank Stoldt and David Depto
2008 - 2011: Development
« April 2008: Chess boxing receives credits from the International Chess Federation FIDE for the first time
« 2008: chess boxing clubs were founded in London and Krasnoyarsk
« 2009 and 2010: Clubs in Los Angeles and New York were established respectively
e 2011: The first international club chess boxing match took place between Berlin and London

Many chess boxing federations were established during this time in England, Germany, France, Russia, India, China
2016: Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, president of FIDE at that time, publicly told Top Sport that he wanted to bring chess boxing to the Olympics However, until now, chess boxing has not been included in the Olympics
*Rules:
Trang 10In a match, two athletes will compete in
11 rounds, including 6 rounds of chess and 5 rounds of boxing alternating, each round has a total playing time of 3 minutes and 1 minute of rest Each player has a countdown timer (similar to the clock in rapid chess) with 9 minutes for the whole match (no extra time)
The match always begins with a round of chess After 3 minutes from the start of the chess round, the clocks of both players (regardless of whether the player has played chess at that time or not) will stop and the match will switch to a 3-minute boxing round (only for the last round)
then both players will play until the game ends). After 3 minutes of boxing, the chess game continues with the chess position and time at the time the game was paused
The match will end if one of the following
Trang 114 The referee loses the athlete due to too many warnings (violating rules, wasting time ) This
is the rule to avoid athletes intentionally not competing in one round to win the next round with an advantage
In case round 11 ends in a draw, a 3- minute boxing round will be help afterward If no athlete is knocked out, the athlete with the higher score (scored
by the boxing judges in extra time) will win In case the scores of both players are equal, the player holding Black will win (because Black has less advantage at the start of the match)

*Risk of injury While the chess aspect of the sport is relatively safe, as injuries are unlikely to occur during the mental activity of playing chess, the boxing component carries inherent risks Boxing involves physical contact and deliberate strikes, which can lead to various injuries such as cuts, bruises, fractures, concussions, and even more severe injuries
To mitigate the risks, chess boxing matches often have rules and safety measures in place, similar to traditional boxing matches Participants typically wear protective gear, such as gloves, mouthguards, and headgear, to minimize

of injury Referees and medical professionals are also present to ensure fair play and provide immediate medical attention if necessary
‘birdmen’' attempting to fly off the end ofa pier into the sea for prize money The event began in
1971 and was held on piers in West Sussex, on the south coast of England First held in Selsey, the event moved to Bognor Regis in 1978 In
13
Trang 142008 and 2009 the competition relocated to Worthing Pier due to renovations of Bognor Regis Pier From 2010 Bognor Regis and Worthing have both held Birdman competition, forming the International Birdman Series, which ended in 2016.It was the longest running Birdman Rally in the world
*Format:
« The competition involves running off an elevated ramp of 20 to 35 feet high at the end of a pier and attempting to ‘fly’ the furthest distance There was an initial prize of £1,000 for anyone who could travel beyond 50 yards (46 m) Since starting, the prize money and qualifying distance has increased and in 2009 at Worthing it stood at £30,000 for reaching
100 metres (330 ft) The competition is divided between serious aviators mainly flying hang-gliders (Condor Class), inventors with home designed and built machines (Leonardo da Vinci Class), and people in fancy dress with little or no actual flying ability (Kingfisher Class), raising money for charity
14
Trang 15*History:
The event started in 1971 as the International Bird-Man Rally in Selsey on the coast of Sussex The event was initiated by George Abel, as part of a fund- raising activity for the Selsey branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Club Abel, a former RAF photographer, emigrated to Australia shortly afterwards, where he also helped to organise Birdman events
In 1978 organisers were informed they could no longer use the pier at Selsey and the event was moved to Bognor Regis.By
1983 the competition had attracted European teams and the attention of the BBC In 2008, because of the demolition of
an 18 metre (60 ft) length of the end of Bognor pier, the 2008 Birdman event was not staged in Bognor, due to safety concerns over water depth at high tide being 13 feet (4.0 m) at the new end of the pier The 2008 and 2009 competitions were held in Worthing as a result of the safety concerns After safety checks in
2009 the water depth was cleared by the Health and Safety Executive as safe for competition Events have subsequently
15
Trang 16been staged in both Worthing and Bognor Regis, creating the International Birdman series Bognor’s 2014 event was cancelled, but the event returned there in
2015 Birdman competitions have also been held in Eastbourne, East Sussex
*Recent events:
In February 2016 the organizers of the Worthing event announced its cancellation for the foreseeable future
Bognor Birdman took place on 3 and 4 September 2016, although the second day's flying was curtailed because of safety concerns over high winds and choppy sea International Bognor Birdman 2021 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but was expected to
return in 2022
*Winners:
Winners in 1984 Harold Zimmer from West Germany flew 57.8 metres to claim the top prize, which then stood at £10,000 By 1990 the record was 71 metres, the prize distance had been increased to 100 metres and the prize money was £25,000 The prize money later stood at
£30,000 for successfully reaching 100m, and for three consecutive years - 2013, 2014 and 2015 - that record was broken at Worthing
