E-commerce (Electronic Commerce) refers to the buying and selling of goods or services over the internet It includes various types of business models like Business-to-Consumer (B2C), Business-to-Business (B2B), Consumer-Business-to-Consumer (C2C), and more E-commerce enables transactions to happen electronically without the need for physical interaction between buyers and sellers, making it a convenient and efficient method for shopping and conducting business

2.2 The development of e-commerce in Vietnam (Presented by Ha Nhi)

2.2.1 E-commerce in the past

E-commerce in Vietnam has not had a long development process like in many other countries By 2005, two major e-commerce platforms - Shopee and Tiki - were established, marking a new beginning for e-commerce in Vietnam TikTok Shop has become the third-largest retail e-commerce platform in Vietnam, although it has only been operating since mid-2022 E-commerce in Vietnam has a short history, and its development is not easy either

2.2.2 E-commerce in recent years

Nowadays, many e-commerce websites offer a variety of Vietnamese goods For example: Lazada, Sendo, Shopee, Tiki, etc In the past few years, online shopping in the country has become increasingly popular and has received great attention from people, especially after the outbreak of the disease Consumers changed their buying habits from traditional shopping to more online consumption

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic promoted online shopping Stores are closed because of the pandemic, causing many people to rush to shop online Adapting to the general trend of the world, especially in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic, e-commerce in Vietnam in recent years has had a positive development

Trang 6

increase in the number of Internet users also creates great potential for the development of e-commerce, especially in the field of online retail

2.3 Advantages of e-commerce

2.3.1 Advantages of e-commerce for consumers (Presented by Hong Tam)

1 Convenient

Let’s talk about advantages to customers first! E-commerce brings lots of benefits that attract many customers The first convenience to mention is rich and up-to-date information: Customers can easily find information quickly and easily through search tools and online shopping applications such as Shopee, Tiki, and Lazada, At the same time, multimedia information (audio, image) on websites and social networks, you can easily find the item you need without putting any effort

Second, online shopping helps consumers save a lot of time, they just need to sit

in one place, choose the item they need, and press the buy button to be able to own it They can save time going to the store to choose, park and pay, etc Online shopping helps them spend more time doing other things

In addition, because there is no cost to rent premises and sales staff, the prices of products and services on e-commerce platforms are often lower than traditional ones, and consumer psychology prefers affordable items Being cheap also requires quality,

so this advantage is indispensable

Besides, purchasing anytime, anywhere helps customers overcome geographical limitations You can order an item from abroad without having to go to their store to pay, because there is payment by credit card or bank account, also without having to come to check the quality because the delivery service will let you check directly at home And it also helps customers overcome the limitation of shopping space, the space is cramped and stuffy, and the surrounding noise makes customer uncomfortable when making purchases

2 Many choices of products and services

When it comes to e-commerce, people will immediately think of a world of goods, where there is a variety of products and services, consumers can freely choose goods that suit their budget and choose the best items for their family because e-commerce is

a gathering place for many different goods suppliers Consumers can choose a supplier that suits their needs, preferences, and finances

Thus, there's no doubt that e-commerce plays a substantial role in customer’ expenditure E-commerce makes society increasingly develop and through it, customers in many regions can easily access and purchase products and services

2.3.2 Advantages of e-commerce for businesses (Presented by Thanh Tam)

1 Cost reduction

One of the biggest advantages of e-commerce business is that it has the potential

to reduce operational costs dramatically By eliminating the need for physical space and retail staff, businesses can save money on rent, wages, and other overhead expenses

Lower operational costs are an advantage of e-commerce businesses because:

Lower overhead costs: E-commerce businesses do not require physical

store-fronts, reducing the cost of rent, utilities, and maintenance

Lower marketing costs: Online businesses can reach a wider audience through

low-cost digital marketing techniques such as social media advertising and search engine optimization

Automation of processes: E-commerce businesses can automate many processes,

such as order fulfillment and inventory management, reducing the need for manual labor

No inventory costs: Online businesses do not have to maintain physical inventory,

reducing the cost of storage, handling, and insurance

More efficient supply chain: E-commerce businesses can more easily manage

their supply chain, reducing the cost of purchasing and shipping products

These factors can help e-commerce businesses reduce their operational costs and increase profitability

2 Expand market scope

One of the most significant advantages of e-commerce is the ability to reach customers anywhere in the world With e-commerce, businesses can expand their customer base beyond their physical location, allowing them to tap into new markets and grow their business Because E-commerce enables businesses to reach a larger number of potential customers beyond their local area, across geographical and cultural borders, this opens new market opportunities and increases the chances of attracting customers who are interested in the products or services being offered The ease and convenience of online shopping has made it possible for people from all over the world to access a wider range of products and services from a variety of e-commerce platforms Additionally, e-e-commerce provides a cost-effective and efficient way for businesses to reach a wider audience, as the costs associated with setting up and running an online store are generally lower than those of a traditional brick-and-mortar store

Trang 8

With an ecommerce store, businesses can reach customers all over the world This can significantly increase the potential customer base and can result in increased sales

3 Strengthen customer relationships

E-commerce offers several benefits that contribute to creating strong relationships with customers Here are some key reasons why:

Personalized shopping experience: E-commerce platforms allow businesses to

collect and analyze customer data, such as browsing behaviour, purchase history, and demographic information This data can be used to provide personalized recommendations and targeted promotions, making customers feel understood and valued By tailoring the shopping experience to individual preferences, businesses can strengthen the bond with their customers

Enhanced customer service: E-commerce allows businesses to provide excellent

customer service through self-service options and automated processes Customers can access FAQs, product information, and tutorials on the website, empowering them to find solutions to their queries independently Additionally, order tracking and prompt shipping notifications reassure customers, making them feel cared for and fostering a positive relationship

Loyalty programs and rewards: E-commerce platforms make it easier for

businesses to implement loyalty programs and reward systems By offering discounts, points, exclusive offers, or freebies to repeat customers, businesses encourage customer retention and foster a sense of loyalty These loyalty programs give customers an incentive to continue engaging with the brand and reinforce the relationship over time

Social media engagement: E-commerce integrates well with social media

platforms, allowing businesses to engage directly with customers through comments, likes, shares, and direct messages By actively participating in social media conversations, businesses can create a community-like environment where customers feel connected to the brand and other like-minded individuals This engagement strengthens the relationship by building trust, loyalty, and a sense of belonging

Feedback and reviews: E-commerce platforms enable customers to leave

feedback and reviews about products or services This feedback serves as valuable information for businesses to understand customer preferences, identify areas for improvement, and showcase positive experiences By actively monitoring and responding to customer feedback, businesses can demonstrate their commitment to customer satisfaction and responsiveness, further strengthening the relationship

2.4 Disadvantages of e-commerce

2.4.1 Disadvantages of e-commerce for consumers (Presented by Diem Quynh)

E-commerce, while providing a convenient shopping experience, presents several significant disadvantages for consumers that can profoundly affect their overall satisfaction and trust in online transactions One of the most pressing issues is security concerns, which loom large in the minds of many shoppers With the increasing prevalence of identity theft and credit card fraud, consumers often feel vulnerable when entering personal and financial information online This exposure to potential cyber threats can be alarming, as high-profile data breaches and hacking incidents have become more common in recent years, heightening public awareness of the risks involved As a result, many consumers may approach online shopping with apprehension, fearing that their sensitive information could be compromised This anxiety can deter individuals from fully embracing e-commerce, leading them to prefer traditional retail options where transactions feel more secure and personal

Moreover, another significant disadvantage relates to product quality, which poses a considerable challenge in the digital marketplace Unlike physical stores where shoppers can inspect items firsthand, online shopping relies heavily on images and descriptions provided by sellers Unfortunately, these representations can often be misleading or exaggerated, resulting in a disconnect between consumer expectations and reality Many consumers have experienced the disappointment of receiving products that do not match the online images or descriptions, leading to frustration, dissatisfaction, and a loss of trust in online retailers This difficulty in assessing product quality before purchase creates a formidable barrier for many consumers, preventing them from fully enjoying the advantages of e-commerce When consumers are unable to gauge the true value of a product, it not only diminishes their overall shopping experience but also contributes to a broader skepticism regarding online transactions Ultimately, these challenges highlight the need for e-commerce platforms

to enhance transparency in product representations and to prioritize security measures, ensuring that consumers can shop online with greater confidence and peace of mind Delivery time is yet another significant concern for online shoppers that can greatly affect their overall experience While the convenience of browsing from home and the ability to access a vast array of products with just a few clicks is undeniably appealing, the waiting period for product delivery can quickly become a source of frustration In contrast to in-store purchases, where consumers can take their items home immediately, online shopping often involves a waiting game that can last days or even weeks This delay can be particularly inconvenient for those who need products

Trang 10

urgently, such as gifts for special occasions, essential household items, or urgent supplies When consumers place an order, they naturally anticipate the joy of receiving their purchases, but the uncertainty surrounding delivery timelines can often diminish that excitement Instead of enjoying the thrill of their new acquisition, consumers find themselves anxiously tracking their orders, frequently checking shipping statuses, and worrying about potential delays This can lead to a sense of dissatisfaction that overshadows the initial enthusiasm of shopping online

In addition to delivery time, the complexity of return processes further compounds the disadvantages of e-commerce Unlike traditional shopping, where returns are generally straightforward and involve a simple exchange or refund at the point of sale, online returns can be cumbersome and time-consuming Many retailers implement complicated return policies that require consumers to navigate through a series of steps, often including repackaging items, printing return labels, and shipping them back at their own expense This added effort can deter customers from making purchases in the first place, as they weigh the potential hassle of returning items against the convenience of shopping online For many consumers, the thought of dealing with a convoluted return process looms large over their decision-making, causing them to hesitate before completing a purchase The complexity of returns can ultimately overshadow the convenience and appeal of e-commerce, impacting not only consumer satisfaction but also their willingness to engage with online platforms in the future This highlights the need for e-commerce businesses to streamline their return processes and improve communication around delivery times to enhance customer trust and loyalty

In conclusion, while e-commerce has transformed the way consumers shop, it is essential to recognize the disadvantages that accompany this mode of purchasing Security concerns, challenges in verifying product quality, extended delivery times, and complicated return processes can significantly affect consumer trust and satisfaction Understanding these issues can help shoppers make informed decisions and navigate the online marketplace more effectively

2.4.2 Disadvantages of e-commerce for businesses (Presented by Minh Quan)

E-commerce offers a multitude of advantages for businesses, fundamentally reshaping their operations and enhancing their connections with consumers in an increasingly digital world Among these advantages, market expansion stands out as one of the most transformative With the rise of the internet, businesses are no longer limited by geographical boundaries, enabling them to reach customers on a global scale This capability effectively dismantles the constraints that traditional
