Trang 9Reporting required by CARD Project
Monthly reports demonstrating progress towards
specific project objectives and outputs
Other reports relating to special initiatives
eg Meat processing equipment
Payments made retrospective ie after acceptance of reports
Trang 10Advisory Board Meeting
Funding received and expected (A$)
Note only 52% of total funding provided in the first two years, causing some financial difficulties
for UQ and GRRC in these periods to meet the expenditure expected
Trang 11Acknowledgement of Support
This project depends on the commitment of many people
to make it successful, and these are now acknowledged
All GRRC Staff , led by Dr Dinh Van Binh and Dr Nguyen Thi Mui who have dedicated many months to this work, particularly Mr Thanh, Mr Tuong, Mr Sao, Mr Minh Thanh, Mr Nghia, Mr Ha, and all those working behind the
scenes supporting them
The dedicated DARD staff from Lam Dong, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan who always attend the farms when we visit, and who will make the greatest long term contribution to improving goat production in the south of Vietnam
The many enthusiastic and dedicated farmers who willingly accepted our staff into their homes, and who are learning new technologies to improve goat
productivity and increase their incomes from farming

Housing and manure management
Advisory Board Meeting Phan Thiet November 2007
Trang 19Housing and manure management
Poor management of manure Removal of manure to holding area
desirable
Trang 20Activities for 2008
Improving housing and health care for goats
Evaluation of efficacy of goat pox vaccines
Continuing 6 monthly vaccinations is not a sustainable management solution Noted goat pox outbreak in kids (2 weeks old) while does have no symptoms
Quarantine of kids with their does recommended Failure to store vaccines correctly causes loss of potency Symptoms of scabby mouth, contagious ecthymia and goat pox similar
Urgent need for further studies on epidemiology of this disease
In Vietnam
Advisory Board Meeting Phan Thiet November 2007
Trang 21Avoidance of parasites through rotational grazing also effective
Keeping herd separate from other goats is important for maintaining goat health
Trang 22Activities for 2008
Improving housing and health care for goats
Improving farmers understanding of animal management
for optimum profitability
Many farmers are bound to traditional methods of management
ie let nature take its course
If farmers wish to increase productivity they must closely examine and possibly
change some of these traditional practices
for exampleAllowing does to kid more than once a year will mean that some will kid when feed is poor and will not only lose the kids but also die themselves during kidding
