Unit 6 : OUR TET HOLIDAY LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED P58-59

I OBJECTIVES:

1 Knowledge: Aims: This lesson will present the vocabulary and grammar items to be learned Ss then practice listening and speaking with the lexical items related to the topic "Our Tet holiday"

2 Competence:

- Give an overview of Tet holiday

- Learn some new things and activities at Tet

- Cover the content of the conversation about Tet holiday topic by listening and reading

- Recognize how to use should and shouldn’t for advice.

3 Character qualities: Ss recognize what is related to Tet/ Ss are aware of talking about Tet activities

II Teaching aids: Grade 6 textbook, Unit 6, Getting started,Pictures - CD disk, cassette - sachmem.vn III Procedure

1 Warm up:

*Aim: - To set the scence for the dialogue.

- To introduce the topic of the unit.

Asking questions relating to Tet

T: make questions relating to Tet

- What do you often do before Tet?

- What do you often do at Tet?

- What do you like most about Tet?

Ss give any answers they know relating to questions

2 Pre-stage:

* Aims:

- teach the vocab.

- To help students practice listening and speaking to check their pronunciation

- To help students get the main idea of the dialogue.

a Vocabulary

1 celebrate (v) to show that a day or an event is important by doing something special on it

2 decorate (v) to make something look more attractive by putting things on it

3 family gathering (N phr.) all members of a family meeting together for a social event

sum họp gia đình /ˈfæməli ˈɡæðərɪŋ/ [definition] [picture]

4 break: to be damaged and separated into two or more parts:

* Check : R&R

b Task 1: Listen and read.

Teacher asks students some brainstorming questions like:

1 What do you think they are talking about?

2 When is Tet?

3 Is it a holiday?

4 What do we do at Tet?

Teacher asks students to give their answers, but does not confirm whether their answers are right or wrong

Teacher plays the recording twice for students to listen and read along

Ss: underline the words that are related to the topic of the unit while they are listening and reading Teacher invites some pairs of students to read the dialogue aloud

3 During-stage:

*Aims:

- To help students scan the dialogue for the information to fill the blanks.

- To develop students’ knowledge of the vocabulary of things relating to Tet.

Task 2: What are Linda and Phong talking about? (p 59)

T: asks students what exactly Phong and Linda are talking about

T: lets them read the three options carefully and see the difference among them

T: confirms the correct answer (They are talking about Tet in Viet Nam.)

Answer key: B

Task 3: Complete the sentences about Tet with the information from the conversation in 1 (p 59)

T: asks students to work independently to fill each blank with the word(s) from the conversation T: may instruct them how to do the exercise and model with the first sentence

E.g.: In sentence 1, we need to fill the time of Tet this year

Answer key: 1 January 2 houses 3 gatherings 4 lucky money 5 Break

Task 4: Match the words/ phrases in the box with the pictures (p 59)

T: lets students look at the pictures first to see if they know the English words for them

T: then allows students to read the words / phrases in the box and do the matching

T: checks the answers

Answer key: 1 b 2 a 3 c 4 D.

 Language notes:

It would be helpful if teacher also highlights in the dialogue should/ shouldn’t, some/ any at the end and tells students that they will learn these language points in the following lessons

4 Post-stage:

*Aims: Stage aim: To allow students’ opportunities to recognize what is related to Tet through a fun

game.

Task 5: Game – Is it about Tet? (p 59)

Students write down two things/ activities and share with the class The class listen and decide whether they are about or not about Tet

Example:

Student in team A : banh chung

Class: It's about Tet

Student in team B : flying a kite

Class: It's not about Tet

Teacher divides the class into 2 or 4 teams

Which team gets more correct words is the winner

IV Homework:

- Learn by heart vocabulary

- Practice the lesson again

- Try to remember five things/ activities you like about Tet

- To prepare vocabulary for the next lesson: A closer look 1
