Placing Framing

Lesson Two

Placing Framing

Framing is used to support floors Floor framing is a collection of elements, such as

girders and beams that support a floor system Framing elements are typically added

after columns are placed

Beams are attached to columns and structural walls Beams are categorized as girders,

joists, braces, or purlins, depending on how they are placed (Refer to the next page for the definitions for different beam types.)

Beams can be placed in plan, section or elevation views

Use the Beam tool instead of the Beam System tool to add beams individually if a

structure has irregular bay spacing or shape Disable the Tag check when placing beams

in a framing plan to keep the plan view less cluttered Duplicate the view and have one

view with the tags placed and one view without tags Use the view without tags while

placing elements and modifying the structure

Terms to know:

A purlin (or purline) is a horizontal structural member in a roof Purlins support the

loads from the roof deck or sheathing and are supported by the principal rafters and/or the

building walls, steel beams etc The use of purlins, as opposed to closely spaced rafters, is common in pre-engineered metal building systems and some timber frame construction

A girder is a large main supporting beam, commonly of steel or reinforced concrete, that carries a heavy transverse (crosswise) load In a floor system, beams and joists transfer

their loads to the girders, which in turn frame into the columns

A joist is any wood, steel, or concrete beam set parallel from wall to wall or across

abutting girders to support a floor or ceiling

A brace is a structural member used to stiffen framework
