STAY WITH A FAMILY ABROAD!

We originally founded our organisation to give English teenagers the opportunity to go and stay with French families to learn the language Then we realised that it made sense to run an exchange programme, and (26) _ to include several different countries Having the chance to practise a language in the country in which it is spoken is, (27) _, very effective and really helps the learning process Going on an exchange allows learners to mix with inhabitants and in this way they can acquire a greater and deeper knowledge of the people (28) language they are studying If you think you'd be interested in participating in our exchange programme, why not contact us to discuss your particular requirements? From the information you give us, we can make (29) _ recommendations and suggest several different possibilities We want to avoid you going somewhere (30) _ and not making the most of the experience Our aim is that all our students have a truly memorable time

Carrying out experiments is common practice in universities, but teachers from Newcastle University were amused to discover that they had been the subjects of a secret test Dr Melissa Bateson, a psychologist, wanted to find out if she could change her colleagues' behaviour when it came to paying for

their hot drinks Teachers were expected to put money in a box in the staff room, but nobody controlled

how much money each teacher gave Dr Bateson put a large picture of some flowers on the wall behind the box for a few weeks and then replaced it with one of a picture of a pair of human eyes At the end of the experiment, Dr Bateson found that teachers paid almost three times more for their drinks when the picture of the eyes was on the wall

Dr Bateson concluded that we are programmed to respond to eyes, even pictures of eyes, and believed that her posters could help combat crime A few years later, another experiment at Newcastle University proved this to be true The experiment involved one of the items most vulnerable to theft that students

possess: bicycles Three posters were made with a warning sentence under the image of a pair of eyes It

said, 'Cycle thieves, we are watching you' Amazingly, the crime rate for bicycle theft fell by an incredible 62% in the places where the posters were displayed The police and transport authorities quickly became interested in Dr Bateson's research and they have since used posters of hostile pairs of eyes in their crime prevention campaigns

First of all, you needed to find your ‘mobile phone’ This in itself could take some time You should remember that these were the days before telephones were attached to the wall, so the chances of losing them were very high Once you found your phone, you had to use your fingers to type a message into a tiny window The messages often came out wrong, because everyone’s fingers were bigger than the keys,

and even when they came out right it was hard to work out what they meant, as it became traditional to

leave out all the vowels in order to save time

But - and this is what seems so strange - you had absolutely no way of knowing whether the text had reached its destination, or whether the recipient had read it Then came the invention of a telephone that allowed people to speak and be spoken to Suddenly, conversations could take place between two people

without any need for the tedious process of type, send, wait, read, type, send, and so on It goes without

room to make more progress Was it possible to come up with a way of talking to other people that did not involve talking into a machine?

And then - out of the blue - came the discovery of face-to-face conversation ‘It was extraordinary,’ remembers someone who was there at the time ‘The human race was suddenly given this marvellous gift

of talking to one another without needing to use a machine or a gadget.’ The world suddenly seemed so fresh We had become so used to texting, and then to talking through mobiles, and then to talking through Immobiles, that we had no idea just how exciting it would be to talk to each other face-to-face And there was no cost involved, no batteries, no problem with reception - it was all great!

Have you ever heard someone sing, “Happy birthday to you happy birthday to you ”? If so, you are hardly alone - millions of people sing that song every year, and the tune is one of the most familiar of any song in North America

In 1924, the tune was published in a song book, which added the “happy birthday” lyrics as verse two Today, the second verse of that song has become one of the best known tunes in the world - and nobody knows who wrote the words!
