A multi- ibre pu h on (MPO) con ector is a multi- ibre device, u ed with rib on ca les, that is

defined in IEC 617 4-7 (al p rts) Plu s f or multimode have flat en f aces, where s sin l

e-mode plu s have an led en faces to minimize b c ref lection These plu s are keyed an

u e a large rectan ular plastic f er ule The plu s can b either pin ed or u pin ed The MPO

plu s rely on the pin an cor esp n in holes to al g the f ibres An ada ter is u ed f or

f urther al g ment an to hold two MPO plu s in a fixed p sition (se Fig re 1)

Figure 1 – MPO conne tor

two diff erent fibre o tic intermate bi ty stan ard : one for a 12-f ibre p sition MPO plu as

same is true for the 16-way con ector

MPO plu s can b one of two typ s: pin ed or u pin ed The plu interf aces are con g red

as a version without pin an another typ with pin The u pin ed plu is intermate ble with

the pin ed plu Some plu s can b adju ted f or either typ

4.3 Polarity

IEC stan ard des ribin MPO con ectors can u e diff erent p larity nomen lature than other

stan ard b dies Eq ivalent p larity nomen latures are s own in p renthesis b low:

• key-up to key-down ( yp A)

• key-up to key-up ( yp B)

• key-up to key-down, p ir wise f lip ( yp C)

For the sake of simpl city, the typ of p larity, A, B, or C is u ed in the des ription b low

The p larity of the con ection b twe n the meter an source can have several

config ration an can b in icated on the p wer meter as "A", "B", an "C" or other common

p larity typ s not stan ardized In some cases, an alternate typ is neces ary

For testers ca a le of identifyin p larity, the p larity is s own on the meter when the source

is selected to s an al fibre p sition an al fibres are con ected pro erly or impro erly

1) One of thre p larity types: The connection u e a stan ard method, key-up to key-down

( yp A), key-up to key-up ( yp B), or key-up to key-down p ir wise f lip ( yp C) In this

case, the tester s ould identify the p larity (se Fig re 2)

2) Un nown p larity: The con ection do not u e a stan ard method, one or more fibres are

not con ected, or the source p larity s an er is off In this case, somethin may b wron

with the ca l n , so the tester can ot determine the p larity However, al thre cases do

not neces ari y in icate an er or in the ca l n

3) Alternate p larity: The con ection are made to a b x wherein a bre kout ca le, also

k own as a fan-out cable, is u ed (se Fig re 3)
