5.1 Ele tric l te t methods

5.1.1 Lon - erm re ista ce of ins lation to d.c volta e

5.1.1.1 Te t s mple

Car y out the test on a sample of ca le of 5 m len th f rom whic al coverin s have b en

removed The cores of lat u s e thed cord s al not b se arated

For ca les havin up to f i e cores, e c core s al b tested For multicore ca les havin

more than five cores, one core of e c colour in the ca le s al b tested, an where the

n mb r of colours is les than 5, d pl cate coloured cores s al b tested as neces ary to

brin the n mb r of cores tested up to a minimum of 5

5.1.1.2 Proc d re

Immerse the sample, f or the p riod an at the temp rature given in the relevant ca le

stan ard, in an aq e u solution of sodium c loride havin a con entration of 10 g/l, with a

len th of a out 2 0 mm at e c en of the sample projectin a ove the solution Connect the

negative p le of a 2 0 V d.c s p ly to the con u tor(s) of the sample an the p sitive p le to

a co p r electrode immersed in the solution for the time given in the relevant ca le stan ard

This test is to demon trate the ef fect of water on the mec anical pro erties of s e th by

determinin the ten i e stren th an elongation at bre k of the s e thin materials in the

u con itioned state as man f actured an in the con itioned state after immersion in water

5.2.1.2 Sampl ng a d preparation of te t pie e

5.2.1.3 Proc dure

Immerse the d mb-b l test pieces in de-ionized water f or the time an at the temp rature

given in the relevant stan ard for the ca le s e thin material Fol owin this immersion,

al ow the test pieces to co l to a temp rature of (2 ± 5) °C b fore removin them fom the

water Dry the test pieces with a sorb nt p p r an within 6 min of dryin me s re b th the

ten ie stren th an the elon ation at bre k in ac ordan e with the proced re des rib d in

Place 2 0 mg – 2 0 mg of the sample into the b tom of a smal soda glas test tub Ad

10 ml of disti ed/de-ionized water to the eva oratin b sin an place this in the f ume

at an an le of 4 ° – 6 ° to the vertical, introd ce a piece of f es ly c t, cle n sodium (a out

the size of a smal p a) (2 0 mg – 2 0 mg) into the mouth of the test tub without al owin it

to come into contact with the sample With the safety s re n in place, gently he t the sodium

u ti it melts an ru s down on to the sample ( here may b a vigorou re ction when the

molten sodium re c es the sample if halogen are present He t the tub gently for a out

1 min, then more stron ly u ti the lower 2 mm of the tub glows red hot Plu ge the red hot

tube into the water in the eva oratin b sin, immediately placin the gau e on to (The

gau e prevents an los of material when the tub s at ers on contact with the water.) Al ow

5.3.4.2 Ide tific tion of the pre e c of c lorine a d/or bromin

To the f irst p rtion of the fitrate, ad s ff i ient nitric acid to make the solution acidic Boi this

solution u ti its total volume has b en red ced by half ( his is to remove an HCN or H2S, if

present, whic would inter ere with the test Ad 1 ml si ver nitrate solution

ammonia, then c loride is present.)

5.3.4.3 Id ntific tion of the pre e c of fluorine

To the secon p rtion of the fi trate, acidify with glacial acetic acid Boi this solution u ti its

b) zirconium solution: 0,0 g zirconium nitrate in 10 ml con entrated HCl di uted with 5 ml

disti ed water)
