ISO8 3 -2:19 7 as European Stand rd EN28 3 -2:19 2 As a consequence of
implementing the European Stand rd this British Stand rd is ren mbered as

The purpose of this stand rd is to define those characteristic neces ary for
suc es ful d ta inter hang e using mag netic disks The information contained is
intended as a g uide to writing complete specifications for man facture,
pur hasing and/ or testing The text of the International Stand rd do s not ac ord
with the recommend tions for drafting product specifications g iv en in the ISO
Directiv es, or in BS 0-3, but the BSI Tech ical Commit e consider the text is
useful as a g uide when disks are being des ribed or specified For this reason this
Part of BS6 5 has a diferent title f om the International Stand rd; it is is ued
as a British Stand rd g uide, and it should only be used as such It should not be
used on its own as a British Stand rd product specification, and, in p rticular, no
claims of complance with this Part of BS6 5 should be ma e
Term inolog y and c nventions The text of the International Stand rd has

used in British Stand rds; at ention is drawn especialy to the folowing
For metric units the comma has be n used as a decimal marker In British
Stand rds it is cur ent practice to use a ful point on the b selne as the decimal

A flexible disk cartridg e shal be in conformance
with ISO8 3 when it me ts al the requirements of

4 General r quirem ents
4.1 Mode of re ording
4.1.1 Track 0 0 , side 0
The mode of recording shal be two-f equency where
the start of ev ery bit cel is a clock flux transition
AONE is represented b a d ta flux transition
betwe n two clock flux transitions
Exceptions to this are defined in4.12
4.1.2 Al l t racks ex cl ud ing t rack 0 0 , sid e 0
The mode of recording shal be Modified Frequency
Modulation ( MFM) for which the conditions are
a) a flux transition shal be writ en at the centre
of each bit cel containing a ONE;
b) a flux transition shal be writ en at each cel
bound ry betwe n consecutiv e bit cel s
containing ZEROs
Exceptions to this are defined in4.12
4.2 Track lo ation toleranc of the re orded
flexible disk cartridg e
The centrelnes of the recorded tracks shal be
within ±0,0 25mm ( ±0.0 1 6 in) of the nominal
positions, ov er the rang e of operating env ironment
specified in ISO 8 3 -1
4.3 Re ording ofset ang le
At the instant of writing or rea ing a mag netic
transition, the transition shal hav e an ang le
of0°±18½ with the ra ius
N T As tracks ma b writ en an o erwriten at e tremes of
the tolerances giv n in4.2 an 4.3, a b n of old information ma
b left at one edg e of the newly writen data an would constitute
u wanted noise when re ding I is therefore neces ary to trim
the edg s of the tracks b erasure after writing
4.4 Density of re ording
4.4.1 The nominal density of recording shal
be13262 ftpra
1)
The resulting nominal bit cel
leng th for track0 ,side0 is 1514ra , and for al the
other tracks it is7 ,54ra
4.4.2 The long -term av erag e bit cel leng th shal be
the av erag e bit cel leng th measured ov er a sector It
shal be within ±2,0% of the nominal bit cel leng th
1)
Flux transitions p r radian
Trang 104.4.3 The short-term av erag e bit cel leng th,
refer ed to a p rticular bit cel, shal be the av erag e
of the leng ths of the preceding eig ht bit cel s It shal
be within ±8% of the long -term av erag e bit cel
leng th
4.5 Flux transition spacing
The instantane us sp cing betwe n flux transitions
ma be influenced b the rea ing and writing
proces , the bit sequence recorded ( pulse c owding
efects) and other factor
The locations of the transitions are defined as the
locations of the peaks in the sig nal when rea ing
Tests should be car ied out using a peak-sensing
rea ampl fier ( se Annex B and Annex C)
4.5.1 Fl ux t ransit ion spacing f r t rack 0 0 ,
side0 ( se Fig ure 1)
4.5.1.1 The sp cing betwe n two clock flux
transitions sur ou ding a d ta flux transition or
betwe n two d ta flux transitions sur ou ding a
clock flux transition shal be betwe n9 %
and14 % of the nominal bit cel leng th
4.5.1.2 The sp cing betwe n two clock flux
transitions not sur ou ding a d ta flux transition or
betwe n two d ta flux transitions sur ou ding a
mis ing clock flux transition shal be betwe n6 %
and1 0% of the nominal bit cel leng th
4.5.1.3 The sp cing betwe n a d te flux transition
and the preceding clock flux transition ( when not
mis ing ) or betwe n a clock flux transition and the
preceding d ta flux transition ( when not mis ing )
shal be betwe n4 % and7 % of the nominal bit
cel leng th
4.5.2 Fl ux t ransit ion sp cing f r al l t racks
ex cl uding t rack 0 0 , side 0 ( se Fig ure 2)
4.5.2.1 The sp cing betwe n the flux transitions in
a sequence of ONEs shal be betwe n8 %
and1 0% of the short-term av erag e bit cel leng th
Fig ure 1
Fig ure 2
Trang 114.5.2.2 The sp cing betwe n the flux transition for a
ONE and that betwe n two ZEROs preceding or
folowing it shal be betwe n13 % and16 % of the
short-term av erag e bit cel leng th
4.5.2.3 The sp cing betwe n the two ONE flux
transitions sur ounding a ZERO bit cel shal l e
betwe n18 % and2 5% of the short-term av erag e
bit cel leng th
4.6 Averag e Sig nal Am pl tude
For each side the Av erag e Sig nal Ampltude on any
non-defectiv e track ( se ISO8 3 -1) of the
inter hang ed flexible disk cartridg e shal be les
than16 % of SRA
1fand more than 4 % of SRA

4.7 Byte
A by te is a g roup of eig ht bit-positions, identified B1
to B8, with B8 most sig nificant and recorded fir t
The bit in each position is a ZERO or a ONE

Track 0 , side 0 and side1is div ided into26 sector s
All other tracks of the flexible disk cartridg e shal
hav e the same n mber of sector , which can be 8,15
or 26

A p ir of tracks, one on each side of the disk, hav ing
the same track n mber
4.10 Cylnder Num ber
The Cy linder Number shal be a two-dig it n mbe
identical with the track n mber of the tracks of the
cy linder
