mentioned in this Part 2, that sub-clause applies as

far as it reasonable Where this standard states

“addition”, “modification” or “replacement”, the

relevant requirement, test specification or

explanatory matter in Part 1 is to be adapted

accordingly

Sub-clauses which are in addition to those in

IEC 335-1 are numbered starting with 101

1 Scope

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:

1.1 Replacement:

This standard applies to coffee mills and coffee

grinders having hoppers with a capacity not

exceeding 500 g of coffee beans, and intended for

household use only

Coffee grinding and coffee milling attachments intended

to be used in combination with multi-purpose kitchen

machines are within the scope of this standard; such

machines must also comply with EN 60335-2-14 Particular

Requirements for Electric Kitchen Machines.

Until an IEC standard for coffee mills and coffee grinders for

commercial catering purposes is issued, this standard may form

a guide to suitable requirements and tests for such appliances.

This standard does not take into account the special hazards

which exist in nurseries and other places where there are young

children or aged or infirm persons without supervision; in such

cases, additional requirements may be necessary.

For appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships

or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary.

For appliances intended to be used in tropical countries, special

requirements may be necessary.

Attention is drawn to the fact that in many countries additional

requirements are specified by the national health authorities.

2 Definitions

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:

2.2.30 Replacement:

Normal load denotes the load obtained when the

appliance is breaking up roasted coffee beans, any

grain-size control which can be adjusted by the user

being set to the position giving the smallest grain

size

During operation, the appliance is slightly shaken or tapped.

In case of doubt, the coffee beans are conditioned for 24 h at a

temperature of 30  2 C in air with a relative humidity

of 60  2 % before starting the relevant test; after conditioning it

is checked that the beans have a density of 0.65  0.03 g/cm 3

Additional definitions:

2.2.101 Coffee mill denotes an appliance designed to

break up coffee beans by means of cutting blades

rotating at high speed

2.2.102 Coffee grinder denotes an appliance

designed to break up coffee beans by means of disks,

cylinders, cones or similar devices

In general, the process of breaking up coffee beans is known as

grinding, whether it is done in a mill or a grinder.

3 General requirement

This clause of Part 1 is applicable

4 General notes on tests

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:

4.2 Addition:

Three additional samples are required for the test of

Sub-clause 19.101.

4.13 Replacement:

The appliance is operated for the period specified for the relevant test, irrespective of any marking for short-time or intermittent operation, unless otherwise specified.

Additional sub-clause:

4.101 The appliances are tested as portable

appliances, unless they are designed to be fixed to a support.

Hand-held appliances are subjected to the additional tests specified for such appliances.

5 Rating

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:

5.1 Replacement:

The maximum rated voltage is 250 V

Compliance is checked by inspection of the marking.

6 Classification

This clause of Part 1 is applicable

7 Marking

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:

7.12 Addition:

The appliance shall be accompanied by an instruction sheet giving details for safe handling, cleaning and maintenance

8 Protection against electric shock

This clause of Part 1 is applicable

9 Starting of motor-operated appliances

This clause of Part 1 is applicable

10 Input and current

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:

10.1 Modification:

Instead of the test specification, the following applies:

Compliance is checked by measuring the input of the appliance, operated at rated voltage and under normal load, 10 s after the appliance has been switched on or immediately before the grinding operation is completed, whichever is the shorter period.

11 Heating

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:

11.7 Replacement:

Appliances having a separate container for collecting

the ground coffee are operated twice, with a rest

period of 1 min between the periods of operation For

each period of operation, the appliance is kept

switched on for the time required to grind the

quantity of coffee beans necessary to fill the collecting

container completely, to grind 125 g of coffee beans

or to empty the hopper, whichever is the shortest

period, unless a timer is provided, in which case the

timer is adjusted to the longest period that can be

provided Before each period of operation, the hopper

is completely filled with coffee beans.

Other appliances are operated three times, with a

rest period of 1 min between the periods of operation

For each period of operation, the appliance is kept

switched on for the time required to grind the

maximum quantity of coffee beans stated in the

manufacturer’s instructions, for the rated operating

time or for 30 s, whichever is the longest period,

unless a timer is provided, in which case the timer is

adjusted to the longest period that can be provided

Before each period of operation, the hopper is filled

with the maximum quantity of coffee beans stated in

the manufacturer’s instructions.

11.10 Modification:

For motors of coffee mills and coffee grinders,

p = 500.

12 Operation under overload

conditions of appliances with heating

elements

This clause of Part 1 is not applicable

13 Electrical insulation and leakage

current at operating temperature

This clause of Part 1 is applicable

14 Radio and television interference

suppression

This clause of Part 1 is applicable

15 Moisture resistance

This clause of Part 1 is applicable

16 Insulation resistance and electric

strength

This clause of Part 1 is applicable

17 Overload protection

This clause of Part 1 is applicable

18 Endurance

This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows:

18.2 Replacement:

The appliance is operated idling, with periods of operation having a duration as specified in Sub-clause 11.7 and rest periods having a duration

sufficient to ensure that the temperature rise does not exceed the values determined during the test of Clause 11.

Appliances not incorporating series motors are supplied at a voltage equal to 1.1 times rated voltage, the sequence of operation being continued for a period such that the running time is equal to the operating time specified below, reduced by the running time necessary for the tests of Clauses 11

and 13.

For these appliances, the supply voltage is then decreased to 0.9 times rated voltage and the sequence of operation continued for a period such that the total running time is equal to the operating time specified below.

For each of the supply voltages specified, the operating time is:

— 15 h for:

• appliances provided with a timer having a

maximum setting not exceeding 1 min;

• appliances which have to be kept switched on

by hand;

• appliances having a separate container for

collecting the ground coffee with a capacity not exceeding 125 g;

— 48 h for other appliances.

Appliances incorporating series motors are supplied

at a voltage such that the motor operates at the speed obtained when the appliance is operating at rated voltage or at the upper limit of the rated voltage range and under normal load, the sequence of operation being continued for a period such that the running time is equal to twice the operating time specified above, reduced by the running time necessary for the tests of Clauses 11 and 13.

The specified operating time is the actual running time Care is taken that, during the test, gaskets, bearings, gears, couplings and oil and grease are not exposed to thermal or mechanical stresses in excess of those occurring in normal use Forced cooling may be used to reduce the duration of the test.
