1 Scope
This standard specifies a test method to verify that
dry film lubricants ensure the required corrosion
protection after exposure to salt spray
2 Normative references
This European Standard incorporates by dated or
undated reference, provisions from other
publications These normative references are cited
at the appropriate places in the text and the
publications are listed hereafter For dated
references, subsequent amendments to or revisions
of any of these publications apply to this European
Standard only when incorporated in it by
amendment or revision For undated references the
latest edition of the publication referred to applies
ISO 9227, Corrosion tests in artificial
atmospheres — Salt spray tests
EN 2491, Aerospace series — Molybdenum
disulphide dry film lubricants applied to fasteners1)
EN 2793, Aerospace series — Phosphate treatment of
ferrous alloys1)
EN 3021, Aerospace series — Molybdenum
disulphide dry lubricants to be applied as a film —
Technical specification1)
EN 3032, Aerospace series — Test method for dry
film lubricants — Thickness measurement
3 Specimens and test equipment
Three specimens in 0,18 % (nominal) carbon steel of
about 75 mm × 150 mm × 3 mm
An apparatus suitable for the measurement of the
coating thickness and a salt spray chamber to
ISO 9227
4 Procedure
Degrease the specimens and dry abrasive blast both surfaces and edges of the specimens with clean dry alumina of 125 4m grain size
Phosphate the specimens according to
EN 2793: zinc phosphate to a mass per unit area
of not less than 7 g/m2 or manganese phosphate to
a mass per unit area of not less than 4 g/m2 Measure the thickness of the specimen taking care not to damage the phosphating
Apply the dry lubricant to the surfaces and edges in accordance with EN 2491 After curing, to avoid the edge effect, seal the edges on 10 mm width with a suitable sealing compound
Verify according to EN 3032 that the thickness meets the requirements of EN 3021
Test the specimens according to ISO 9227 After an exposure for 96 h, remove them and rinse them in deionized water to remove salt residues
5 Expression of results
Examine the specimens visually, note the number and size of any rust spots and the number of blisters
on each specimen
6 Test report
It shall include the following:
— reference to this standard;
— film designation to EN 3021;
— application method to EN 2491;
— curing conditions;
— visual inspection results
