IWT Inland Port Capacity

• The number of inland waterway ports and piers has increased rapidly

• According to the 2003 statistics the number of ports and piers on the central river system is 2.608, including 72 ports and 2.536 piers

• In the North there are 17 river ports, 5 of them are managed by VIWA

• In the South there are 16 river ports scattered all over Mekong Delta plain, where the biggest one can handle 400,000 tons of cargo annually

Vietnam: Organisation

Vietnam Inland Waterways Administration (VIWA)

• Agency of Ministry of Transport, governs and maintains the ports, rivers,

canals and navigable lakes of Vietnam

• VIWA governs 77 ports in Vietnam, including 33 river ports It manages five of them, all in the north, Hai Phong, Ninh Binh, Bac Ninh, Viet Tri and Hoa Binh VIWA maintains port authorities for four seaports:

Port Authority 1 at Hai Phong

Port Authority 2 at Hanoi

Port Authority 3 at Ho Chi Minh City

Port Authority 4 at Can Tho

• VIWA operates three vocational Inland Waterway Schools:

IWS 1 at Nam Dong, Nam Sach District of Hai Duong Province;

IWS 2 at Ho Chi Minh City;

IW - Technical Worker School at Hai Phong.
