Usage: We use this expression to talk about a past situation that is no longer

true It tells us that there was a repeated action or state in the past which has

now changed

Example:

I used to have long hair (but now I have short hair).

She used to be a long-distance runner when she was younger.

Note!

With this “used to” there is no verb “be”

We CAN'T say ”I am used to have long hair”

E.g.:

- Did you use to be a teacher?

- She didn't use to like

chocolate, but she does now

Watch out! With the negative and

the question it's 'use' and not 'used':

USED TO + INFINITIVE

Grammar

• BE USED TO = Be familiar with or Be accustomed to.

Usage: To talk about things which feel normal for us or things that we are

accustomed to

Example: I'm used to getting up early, so I don't mind doing it.

I've lived in the UK almost all my life, so I'm used to rain.

Note that we make the negative or the question with the verb “be” in

the normal way The “used to” doesn't change:

E.g.: Lucy isn't used to staying up late, so she's very tired today

Are your children used to walking a lot?

I'm finding this new job hard but I'm sure I'll get used to it soon.

I'm getting used to the noise now I found it really stressful when I

BE/GET USED TO + V-ING/N/NP

"Be used to" and "Get used to" can be used about the past, present or

future

Grammar

Usage: To describe something being used for what, for something Be

used for is only used for indicating instrumental actions

Example:

My computer is used for majority study.

My Rolls Royce is used for travelling everywhere.
