CLIMBING TRIP
by Samantha Davis
My dad and I have both done a bit of climbing at our local sports centre So we
decided to go on a trip together, climbing the high rocks along the coastline of a smallisland Although it wasn’t far from where we live, the journey across the sea tookquite a long time – but it was worth it! As we approached the island, Dad pointed outthe rocks covered in colourful plants, wild goats and bees, which were once the onlysigns of life on this now popular place for visitors The island has become well-known
as a climbing venue and the ferry we took across to the island was full of climberscarrying boots and backpacks We arrived at the island’s harbour, full of
brightly-coloured houses lit by the early-morning sun We were met by a driver in anancient old car, arranged by the travel company we’d booked with The driver took us
to the tiny apartment, which, like the car, had seen better days, but it was comfortableand we weren’t going to spend much time there anyway There are lots of possibleclimbs up the island’s rocks, and not all of them have been discovered by climbers, but many have places clearly marked out so climbers can easily see where to put theirhands and feet All we needed were shoes, ropes and the equipment for attaching therope to the rocks, although despite the markings on the rocks, I still had problems!Anyway, climbing is obviously not without risk, and things can still go wrong, butyou’re far less likely to get into difficulties on the island There was a wide range ofclimbers, both in ability and age, so there was no need for my previous worries aboutbeing the only teenager Away from the rocks and back in the town, there was a verysociable atmosphere in the cafes, where we compared notes on what we’d achievedthat day One day, our climbing destination was a rough cliff, with very little to put myhands and feet on It was amazing how quickly I learnt to attach my rope onto the rock
Trang 5to avoid falling as I climbed! Then I realised the boy climbing next to me was
someone I knew We waved, smiled and moved on, although he seemed to find therock far less of a challenge! Once Dad and I were down at ground level again, westopped at a beach, which was deserted We walked along with our feet in the waterand promised ourselves that it wouldn’t be the last time that we sat on that stretch ofbeach
QUESTION:
1 Did Samantha and her father travel a great distance to the place where theywent climbing?
2 After Samantha and her father climbed the mountain at the center, what
decision did they make?
3 What did they need to prepare when climbing the mountain?
4 Does she feel comfortable being taken to the small apartment? Why is she comfortable with that small apartment?
5 What was she told by her father when she was close to the island?
6 Does Samantha think the island in general is a less safe climbing place thanmost other places?
7 Did they think this was the last time they would sit on that stretch of beach?
8 When she arrived at the island's harbor, what did she see?
9 Are there still many mountain climbing routes on the island waiting to bediscovered?
10 Does Samantha have difficulty with rope technique to keep herself safe?

ĐOẠN 3 : ( Quỳnh An ) - TF TEXT 1: TRAVELLING WEST
Long ago, when people settled the United States, most lived in the East, and it washard to travel west There were no planes, trains, or automobiles People travelled bywagon or boat, and it took ages to reach a destination.Although it was difficult, in the
Trang 61840s, many people travelled far across the United States from the East to the West. They were pioneers They settled in the western part of the country after a challengingjourney to a new life.
Getting to the West was very difficult because there were no roads and there weremany obstacles to travel People travelled in groups, and each family bought a
covered wagon, which is a big wooden wagon with a kind of tent on it It was small, about the size of an automobile, but it was home for the whole family while theytravelled to their new home Each family packed the tools and supplies they needed tobuild a new life in the West They had to fit all they took in their wagon, so theybrought only the items that were essential. It was dangerous to try to travel west
without protection, so families travelled together, combining their wagons into whatwas called a wagon train It was a group of wagons all going the same way To
prepare, they met with other families to plan their trip, choosing a route based on thetravels of others When the families started the trip, they did not know each other, theyonly had in common that they were leaving the East to start a new life in the West. They met when the trip began, and they spent more than a year together, so they got toknow each other well Sometimes they borrowed tools from each other, and
sometimes they shared food When the wagons encountered a problem, such as astorm that caused wagons to stick in muddy holes, they solved it together
It took more than a year to reach the West, and many things happened along the route. The families sometimes had babies along the way, which delayed the progress as thewagon train would stop for a few days to help the mother with the baby Then theykept going, persisting whatever the weather, because they knew they had a long way
to travel and could not delay long
When the wagon train got to the West, the families settled there, building homes, starting farms They created communities, and instead of being partners in a trip theywere collaborators in a community Those communities grew into towns, and thensome expanded into cities, from a wagon train to a metropolis
Trang 7In the next century, people built a railroad that crossed the United States By 1900,there were many more people in the West, and thousands of people came west bytrain A trip that had taken months now took passengers a few days of comfortabletransit The railroad brought many changes, and the pioneers became legends as thecountry developed into the nation of today.
2 Families travelled only by sea from east to west
3 There were no planes or automobiles in the US before the 1840s
4 Family members lived in automobiles on the way they travelled to the west
5 They have to fill up their wagonto go to the West so they buy a lot of stuff

The Albuquerque Balloon Festival
Every autumn, the sky above the desert city of Albuquerque in the south-western
United States turns into a mass of bright colours This is the Albuquerque Balloon
Festival, an annual nine-day event
The first festival was held in 1972 to celebrate the 50th birthday of the local radio
station There were about a dozen hot-air balloons and they took off from the car
park in the middle of Albuquerque From these small beginnings, the festival has
Trang 11grown steadily This year at least a thousand balloons from over one third of the countries of the world are expected at its current out-of-town site.
What to see
The pilots are in radio contact with each other and all light up the burners of their
balloons at the same time These are known as 'balloon glows' and are an opportunity
to take fantastic photographs However, you must arrive just after night has fallen orbefore 5.30 am to see these 'glows' as the balloons rise into the dark sky
During the day, you can walk around among the balloons and chat to the pilots as theyprepare for take-off The balloons come in all sizes and colours, some in the shapes ofanimals or cartoon characters - and, of course, well-known products such as varieties
of soft drinks and fast food Kids will love it
In the afternoon, why not take to the sky yourself by arranging a balloon flight overthe desert with one of the many companies offering balloon rides? Another possibility
is to take the cable car from the desert floor to the top of the nearby mountains, thelongest such ride anywhere, and enjoy a bird's-eye view of the festival There areplenty of other attractions for visitors of all ages, including balloon races and fireworkdisplays on the opening evening and the last three evenings of the festival
The Albuquerque Box
This is a local wind pattern that creates perfect conditions for balloonists The SandiaMountains protect the balloons from strong winds, and at the same time create gentlercurrents of wind at different heights This means that by rising or descending, skilfulpilots can control the direction of their balloons
Practical advice
Buy your tickets in advance (they are available online) and save yourself a long wait
to get into the festival site Wear several layers of thin clothing At night and in theearly morning it can be quite cool, but during the day sunglasses and sunscreen areessential Bring a flashlight for night-time events and, of course, bring your camera Ifyou're not a digital photographer, you'll need high-speed film for evening and
night-time pictures
Trang 12In the southwest of the USA, the Albuquerque Balloon festival lasts nine days everyfall In order to celebrate the local radio station's 50th anniversary, the festival wasfirst conducted in 1972 The thousand balloon burners are all turned together by thepilots being all in radio touch with one another You must arrive immediately as
darkness falls or before 5.30 a.m to get the best photos During the day, you can walkaround the balloons of various shapes and colors To schedule a balloon flight, keep intouch with firms who do it, or you can take a cable car to a nearby mountain Thereare several other attractions, especially fireworks displays on the festival's first andlast three evenings Local wind patterns known as "The Albuquerque Box" are idealfor balloonists The Sandia Mountains allow skilled pilots to adjust the path of theirballoons while ascending or falling You should buy tickets in advance on the Internet. You also prepare a few layers of thin clothing, sunglasses, suncream, flashlight,
