UNIT 8: FILMS Lesson 3: A Closer look 2

Time: 45 minutes

I OBJECTIVES:

1 Knowledge:

By the end of the lesson, students can use although/though and to express contrast between two pieces of information in the same sentences and

use however to express contrast between two sentences.

2 Competence:

Co-operation, self- study, using language to do exercises

3 Attitude:

Students will be more aware of spending time watching film and choose the best film for themselves

II TEACHING AIDS & MATERIALS:

1 Teacher:

- Grade 7 textbook

- Smart TV

- Laptop

2 Students:

- Text books, notebooks, ….

III PROCEDURES:

Activity 1: Warm up (Brainstorming) (5 minutes)

Goal To help students to remind some conjunctions which they

have learnt in class 6

Procedure - Teacher asks students to write some conjunctions which

they have learnt on the board

- Students come to the board and write

conjunctions

Activity 2: GRAMMAR – Although/Though (10 minutes)

Goal To help students to connect two contrasting ideas in the same

sentence by using although/though

Input Although /though

We use although/though before a clause to connect two

contrasting ideas in the same sentence

Example: 1 Although / T hough John Peters is an amateur actor, he gave a great performance in his latest film

2 John Peters gave a great performance in his latest film although /though he is an amateur actor

Task 1: Combine the two sentences, using although /though

Example: She watched the film twice She didn’t understand

the film

Although/Though she watched the film twice, she

didn’t understand it

She didn’t understand the film although/though she

watched it twice

1 The questions were very difficult He solved them easily

2 He was a great actor He never played a leading role in a film

3 They spent a lot of money on the film The film wasn't a big success

4 The film was a comedy I didn't find it funny at all

5 We played well We couldn't win the match

1 Although/Though the questions were very difficult, he solved them easily

2. Although/Though he was a great actor, he never played a leading role in a film

Procedure - Teacher shows two the examples on the board.

- Students look at the board.

- Teacher explains the structures

- Students listen carefully

- Teacher has students to complete the tasks individually

- Students listen and follow the teacher’s instructions

- Teacher checks the answers as a class and explains if students have any difficulty understanding how to use the conjunctions

- Ss copy the content into notebook

Activity 3: GRAMMAR – However (8 minutes)

Goal To help sts to connect two contrasting ideas between two

sentences (However)

We use however to contrast ideas in two sentences We

normally use a comma after it

Example: John Peters is an amateur actor However, he

gave a great performance in his latest film

Task 2: Complete the sentences using although/ though

or however

1 _the acting in the film was good, I didn’t like its story

2 I felt really tired _, I went to see the film

3 I really enjoyed the new film most of my friends didn’t like it

4 He studied hard for the exam , he failed it

5 Mai speaks English very well _ her native language is Vietnamese

Procedure - Teacher shows the example on the board.

- Students look at the board

- Teacher explains the structure

Activity 4: Task 4: Choose the correct answer A, B, or C to complete each sentence (6 minutes)

Goal To help students have some practice on the use of

conjunctions

- Teacher asks students to read the sentences and choose the correct answer individually

- Teacher calls students to say out their answers

- Teacher gives feedback

Activity 5: Task 3: Use your own ideas to complete the following sentences Then compare your sentences with a partner's (6 minutes)

- Students will be used those cue words to show their ideas

- Teacher asks students to work in pairs

- Teacher asks students to share their ideas in front of the class

- Teacher corrects if necessary

Activity 6: Task 5: Game (Chain story) ( 8 minutes)

Goal To help students have some practice on the use of

conjunctions

Input Develop a story using although/though

Begining with: Although it rained yesterday,

Outcome Example:

Student 1: Although it rained yesterday, we went shopping

Student 2: Although/Though we went shopping, we didn’t buy anything

Student 3: Although/Though we didn’t buy anything,

Student 4: ………

Procedure - Teacher gives instructions on how to play “Chain story”

- Teacher asks students work in group of 4

- Teacher calls each group to show their answers

- Teacher corrects students’pronunciation

* Homework: (2 minutes)

- Learn the structures

- Do task 1,2,3,4 into your notebooks

- Prepare Unit 8: Skills 1
