Joint Statement

Fairview Park City School District

2019-20

Southwest Regional Business Advisory Council:

The Fairview Park City School District continued to work collaboratively with Polaris Career Center and its partner school districts to work towards the shared goal of developing students that are prepared for college, career or military upon graduation from high school This year, Polaris Career Center, Berea City Schools, Fairview Park City Schools, Olmsted Falls City Schools, North Olmsted City Schools and Strongsville City Schools continued to meet as the Southwest Regional Business Advisory Council (SRBAC) The SRBAC (see Exhibit A) is comprised of more than 70 business, community and school representatives

Meeting schedule:

The SRBAC committed to meet four times this school year Meeting dates for the 2019-20 school year were (are) as follows:

October 25, 2019

December 6, 2019

February 7, 2020

April 3, 2020

Plan/Implementation Progress:

The regional approach to this business advisory council continues to be a strong point The advantage of meeting as a regional council is that participants discuss workforce/business needs and student skills requirements from a regional perspective versus focusing solely on the needs and expectations of one community Meeting agendas coincided with recommendations from the Ohio Department of Education and included locally appropriate topics including:

• Delineating employment skills and developing curriculum to instill these skills

• How do we get more businesses around the table?

• Tackling the workforce challenges of today and tomorrow

• Meeting the needs of our local communities – An economic development perspective

• What are economic development professionals hearing from employers?

Summary of Activities:

To date, the council has met to discuss a number of timely topics New this year, we invited industry experts to participate in interactive panel discussions:

• Identify key employability/job ready skills

• Increase business involvement in the council

• Discuss how a local hospital is handling current workforce challenges

Trang 2

• Talk about job skills needed from an economic development perspective

Advice/Recommendations:

We have received a sizeable amount of input from the council as it relates to required skills, job readiness, connecting students to real world opportunities and other related topics Below is a summary of those discussions and recommendations:

Delineating employment skills and developing curriculum to instill these skills

• Member made a note that when senior exit interviews are done at Fairview, there is a noticeable difference between Polaris students and non-Polaris Students Polaris students are much more confident and professional

• Skills identified as needs:

o Verbal Communication

o Effective technology communications (not text typing in professional

environments)

o Need to be ready to learn in new environments and know it is ok to say they do not know how to do something

o Understand how to give a business presentation, not a classroom presentation

• Connect with manufacturing/trades organizations

• Stress the importance of certifications

• Patience – Too much focus on instant gratification

• Learn the job first

• Student expectations – wanting to be in a leadership position immediately

• Learn – have a mentor

• Interns – you have to earn your stripes

• Learn the business

• Too much instant gratification

• Need to be patient

• Instant gratification – caused by technology

• It’s okay not to be proficient immediately

• Businesses meeting students and graduates where they are at any given time

• Critical thinking and team players are needed in the work place

• What are the disconnects? Does the curriculum mirror what industry and business needs?

• Teachers teach the way they were taught

• Education – has not changed to meet the changes in business and industry

• Paradigm shift needed in education

How do we get more businesses around the table?

• Invite people to come to the meeting with something specific to do, something we need that is relevant to their business (like answering the 1st question ahead of time)

• Do personal invites from other business people

• Have agenda out before meeting

• ID who we have on councils

• Invite some of them to meetings

Trang 3

• Target certain businesses – Do demos, have discussions, invite guests, have high level guest speaker discuss their needs

• Meet with businesses on a personal level

• More outreach from the schools to the businesses

• “Go out and ask for help”

• Specific city business advisory councils

• Our council is somewhat limiting due to the size and makeup

• Hard to participate for businesses due to running the business

• Try and make just one business

• Start local and then branch off and broaden

• Meet the business folks on their “turf” – they are busy and can’t make the time to attend meetings
