ACTION RECOMMENDED: Approval

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Commission, under the Postsecondary

Authorization Act, has the “power and duty” to act upon applications for authorization of educational programs in the state Applications have been reviewed and staff has determined that all necessary documentation for the institutions submitting new program applications is in accordance with the Act and postsecondary rules The Committee on Postsecondary Educational Institutions, which is a review and advisory committee to the Commission, met

on July 11, 2013 and affirmed staff recommendations for approval

based on recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in

Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) The Surgical Technology accreditation process cannot begin until the first cohort of students starts The institution then will submit a detailed self-study, and ARC/STSA will schedule a site visit during the first cohort’s externship quarter The institution will work with

ARC/STSA and CAAHEP to complete the necessary application requirements

(including the site visit) prior to the graduation of the first cohort, so that if

accreditation is granted, the first cohort will then be able to sit for the Certified

Surgical Technology (CST) examination If accreditation is not granted, the students will be taught out at another institution with a Surgical Technology Program or Fortis Institute will refund any monies paid by the students
