What is Governor’s School?

Why should I be interested?

Each summer, a unique learning community is built by some of North Carolina’s brightest and most talented high school students with a fascinating nationwide

group of faculty and staff!

Governor’s School: Details

• Students live in a residence hall, with a roommate, on a

college campus

• Intriguing electives outside your discipline, fascinating

speakers, amazing concerts/performances, fun recreational opportunities, and more!

• There are no tests or grades at Governor’s School The

pressure for scores and high marks is replaced by an

excitement for questioning and learning for its own sake

Governor’s School: Background

• Oldest statewide summer academic program in the country for gifted high school students

• Began in 1963 at Salem College; an east/west program

began in 1978 at Salem and St Andrew’s College in

Laurinburg; now east program is at Meredith College in

Raleigh and West Program at High Point University

• A program for gifted/talented high school students (may or may not be identified Gifted)

• On average, 675 students attend statewide (2 campuses)

• Students participate in the area of academics OR in

visual/performing Arts

• Offers visitations, live performances, field trips, seminars, exploration, discovery, recreational events

No tests, no grades—”just producers of knowledge, problem solvers, and problem finders.—”Gallagher, 1994

Governor’s School: Courses Offered

• Students can apply in Academic Areas- English, Math,

Natural Science, Social Science, French, or Spanish (11th graders only)

• Students can apply in Arts areas:

– Choral Music, Dance, Instrumental Music (10th or 11th graders)

– Theater and Visual Arts (11th graders only)

The emphasis in all disciplines is on contemporary texts,

compositions, artistic expressions, issues, and ideas and the theories that flow from them

Process Timeline

• The timeline of this process and due dates for your completed Applications at Atkins is:

– October 8th: Atkins GS Virtual Interest Meeting

• Gov School Nomination Packet 2021

– October 13th: Student submits the attached Google form stating their interest in applying to Gov School

• Atkins Gov School Interest Form

– October 23rd: Have Applications/

Recommendations to Mrs Tubbs

(fatubbs@wsfcs.k12.nc.us), for review before the final submission date (please share via google doc)

– November 2nd by 4:00pm: Final completed Gov

School Applications & Recommendations are due to Mrs Tubbs (this is a hard deadline, therefore no

application packets will be accepted after this

deadline)

Process Timeline (cont.)

• Early December Nomination Applications from individual school districts submitted to DPI

• January/February 2021 – Governor’s School auditions in Art,

Choral Music, Dance, Instrumental Music, and Theater; dates and

locations TBD All students who are nominated in these areas and who meet the eligibility requirements will be notified individually and

invited to audition

• March 2, 2021 Student selections announced to school officials

• March 9, 2021 – Letters of selection/non-selection mailed to students

• April 6, 2021 – Acceptance notice and tuition submitted to DPI

• *June 20th -July 28, 2021 Governor’s School 2021

* Dates are tentative (confirmed dates to come in early 2021)

HOW? Eligibility

1 NC Resident at time of attendance (No

exchange students)

2 Must be in 11th grade at time of nomination

(or 10th or 11th for Dance, Choral Music and Instrumental Music)

3 May be nominated in ONLY ONE*** area

4 May NOT have attended Governor’s School

before

5 Student must COMMIT to attend entire 5 ½

weeks of program

Nomination Packets

• Will be electronic this year.

• The student eligibility section is not a part of the 2021 application (disregard that section

of the packet)

• Visit the Governor’s School Website for more information about the program

Nomination Packets

• The 2021 Governor’s School Nomination Packet is

available, now is your chance to gather information!

• Here’s what to do:

– Look at the 2021 Nomination packet Also, review the program information on the NC Governor’s School website

– Complete the Essays (one is general and one is based on your subject area)

– Complete Personal Readiness Section

– Think about 2 recommendations (recommenders

should submit completed forms directly to Mrs Tubbs)

– Complete the entire application and

recommendation packet and submit it to Mrs

Tubbs ( fatubbs@wsfcs.k12.nc.us ) by November 2nd.

Nomination Packets:

• Essays

– Essay #1- General (all students)- Identify and discuss one or more of the most pressing

questions you have about how the world works How are you planning to pursue answers?

– Essay #2- Specific to nomination area- In

this essay, each prompt is specific to the area of interest (See the nomination packet for

specifics)

• PERSONAL READINESS

– Experiences

• School and community activities, awards and honors during the last three years

• Essay “Why any two of these are important to you.”

• Residential Learning – describe your readiness

to participate in a residential learning community; include experiences being away from family and community for significant periods of time

Please ask for two recommendations:

• One must be from a high school teacher (preferably in area of nomination)

• One can be from another teacher, or staff member, community member, etc (Not a family member)

Please Note: Tuition

• $500 Tuition will be due in April 2021 after

notification of selection.

• Needs-based scholarships are available.

• Tuition is non refundable and non transferable

• Please do not let the cost keep you from applying- if

you don’t get a scholarship, we will help you find needed funding!
