Student Instructions:

1 Information that you must fill out is highlighted in grey

2 Research a variety of courses you wish to take at your top choice foreign institution, and collect information to provide to the

Department Chair to review *It is often very difficult to obtain full course syllabi for international courses, and in some cases syllabi

do not exist However, you should try your best to locate all relevant course information that is available at that time

3 Request an appointment with the appropriate Department Chair several weeks in advance of your deadline An incomplete or

late approval form will jeopardize your likelihood of being approved to study abroad Any courses that do not fit an ASC

department may be reviewed for elective credit by the Dean of Academic Advising

4 You may make suggestions to the department chairs regarding where you would like your credit to count or possible equivalents

5 Once all courses have been reviewed and signed by the appropriate Department Chairs and Major Advisor, upload the completed form to your Carta application by the deadline

6 Sometimes your chosen study abroad program changes, or new courses need to be reviewed when preparing for registration at the foreign institution If so, you must contact the appropriate Department Chairs (usually via email if you are already abroad) and provide course information, and ensure any new approvals are submitted to the Center for Global Learning via Carta

7 Any non-equivalent courses that fall under Intellectual Breadth or Specialization requirements must be retroactively approved

by the Summit Faculty Committee upon return from study abroad and are not guaranteed Syllabi are required for review

Department Chair Instructions:

1 Review student’s course listings on next page and relevant course information provided and fill out the form accordingly

a Please note - the majority of study abroad courses approved for credit do not have ASC equivalents Department chairs

routinely approve non-equivalent study abroad courses for major, minor, standards, or general elective credit within a specific academic discipline

b You are not expected to, or responsible for, determining the number of credits for which a course can count This is done by

the Dean of Academic Advising upon receipt of the official transcript You need only review course content to determine

appropriateness for your department and the content level

c Courses from abroad do not always have course numbers, or the numbers do not always correspond to the same level we

would consider in the US For example, many institutions abroad have 3-year degree programs Therefore, a 2nd year course at their institution might be a 200-level or 300-level at Agnes Scott

2 Return the approved form to the student, or if abroad, respond to the student’s email with the appropriate information

3 In some cases, Department Chairs may approve a course, but request the student submit further course information when they register abroad, or request to review the student’s course work when they return to Agnes Scott

We encourage dialogue between students and department chairs and/or major advisors to discuss how and why courses chosen will

provide a meaningful contribution to their experience abroad, as well as to their academic plan
