in colleges and universities

Purpose of the Ministry

The purpose of the Cascade Higher Education and Campus Ministry (HECM) is to maintain and promote the value of higher education at all levels—undergraduate and post graduate—as an equalizer in the

social structure through identifying and awarding resources,

promoting the integration of faith and secular life experiences and

celebrating higher education achievement

Dr Judith Simmons

Sponsor of the Killen and Simmons Family Legacy Award

Judith Simmons is a native of Pittsburgh, PA Dr Simmons is a doctorate level professional with nearly 40 years of extensive experience in teaching, school guidance counseling and education administration To further her educational aspirations and work with school districts across the country, she accepted an offer to become a resident fellow at the Institute for Learning at the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh

Dr Simmons also participated in the Public Education Project at Harvard

University to focus her attention on public school district leaders and central problems toward increasing the achievement levels of all students In addition, Judith is a creative, self-motivated and enthusiastic individual who

demonstrates excellent interpersonal communications skill, leadership and organizational skills

Dr Bridgette L Yancy

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Dr Bridgette LaShawn Yancy leveraged her gifted violin play to obtain a full scholarship to Loyola University New Orleans where she earned a Bachelor of Music Education in 2002 During that time, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and The Order of Omega Greek Honor Society In 2005, she earned a master’s degree in Music Education from Florida State University In 2017, Dr Yancy completed a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Music Education at Boston University She recently graduated with a Doctor of Worship Studies in Christian Music from Liberty University in May 2020

Dr Yancy has used her talents on the violin to play with such persons as Stevie Wonder and T-Pain as well as with noted Symphony Orchestras across the southeast United States

Dr Yancy has taught music since her sophomore year in high school and has extended her educational reach by establishing Yancy’s Music Studio, LLC for her music lessons, Camp Etude Summer Music Camp, LLC, and The Bridge String Quartet, LLC, for performances She has taught Orchestra, Band, General Music, and Chorus for public schools in New Orleans, Tallahassee, and various Metro Atlanta counties

Closer to home, Dr Yancy has shared her musical and educational gifts by directing Cascade UMC’s Young People’s Division and the Instruments of Praise Orchestras, from

2010 – 2016 She has served as The Children’s Church Praise and Worship Leader at Cascade UMC and Elizabeth Baptist Church She has also taught Sunday school, and Small Group Classes at both Cascade and Elizabeth In her private time, Dr Yancy plays Electric Violin with the Neighborhood Jazz Band and The Moonlight Jazz Trio

The Robert and Clarissa Baker Award

This award was established in 2011, by Mr Robert Baker and Dr Clarissa Baker, to encourage

academic excellence among African American youth Specifically, for students majoring in nursing, engineering, or business administration, at Tuskegee University A 3.0 GPA is required

Mr Robert Baker is an Executive Vice President at DHR International and a Director on the Board of State Auto Insurance Company He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Tuskegee University and a Master of Business Administration from Columbia University He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc

Dr Clarissa Baker is a former Executive Vice President of Bethesda Hospitals and

Medical Center in Cincinnati, OH She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Tuskegee University, a Master of Hospital Administration from Columbia University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Care Organization and Administration from the University

of Cincinnati She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc The Bakers, in

conjunction with the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee coordinate this award

Hattie Baker Award

Mrs Hattie Baker is the Grandmother of a long-time Cascade UMC member, Carolyn Byrd She was born and raised in Valdosta, Georgia and believed that education is the key to a successful life Mrs Baker has always pushed young people to achieve their dreams through higher education, and her family is incredibly pleased to give this award in her honor

This award is sponsored by Mr & Mrs Alfred Byrd, and coordinated by the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee

Carolyn and Alfred Byrd Award

Mr Alfred Byrd is a retired vice president and general manager from the Xerox Corporation A Morehouse College graduate, he is currently Chairman and CEO of Byrd Alliance Group, LLC, and president and chief operation officer of GlobalTech Financial Mrs Carolyn Byrd, a 23-year seasoned veteran of The Coca-Cola Company and former president of Coca-Cola Financial Corporation, is currently Chairman and CEO of GlobalTech LLC This award was

established in 1999, by Mr & Mrs Byrd, to encourage academic excellence among African-American youth

The recipient of this award need not be a member of Cascade United Methodist Church A GPA of 2.5 is required, and the applicant must show active participation in church and community activities Mr & Mrs Byrd along with the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee coordinate this award

Jennie L Carroll Memorial Award

This award is sponsored by the Carroll Family to honor the memory of an incredible mother and grandmother who inspired and encouraged learning She was an advocate and nurturer to many students from pre-school through graduate school She believed in helping students achieve

empowerment and self-sufficiency through education

This award is designed to support and encourage a highly motivated, hardworking, scholarly, needy student with a major or focus in mathematics, technology, business, or entrepreneurship (with consideration to an infusion of arts studies) This award is coordinated by Mrs Beverly Carroll Daniel

Dr John & Mrs Susan Gibson Carter Award

Dr John H Carter is a retired vice president from the American Telephone and

Telegraph Company (formerly BellSouth) A native of Thomaston, GA, he holds a B.A Degree from Morris Brown College in Social Studies, a Master of Human Resources from the University of Utah, a Master of

Management from the University of Southern California and a Doctor of Business Administration from California Coast

University A Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., he enjoyed a second career

as an adjunct professor of business and human resources at Strayer University until his final retirement in 2016 Dr Carter established an individual award in 2007 to

encourage academic excellence among African-American males in Thomaston, GA

Mrs Susan Gibson Carter is a former Human Resource Manager and a native of

Cedartown, Georgia She is a graduate of the former Cedar Hill High School and Morris Brown College Mrs Carter is considered a role model too many of the young people in her hometown She served on the local board of the United Methodist

Children’s Home, served as keynote speaker at her former church, Cedar Hill High School’s Grand Reunion and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Local Chapter

Debutantes, and social skills workshop presenter to several youth groups In an effort

to give back even more to the young people of this community and to promote higher education, an individual outreach scholarship was established in 2003 This award provides an incentive to female students from Cedartown, Georgia, who has been accepted and plans to enroll at an HBCU

In 2014, the Carters elected to combine their awards into one Dr John and Mrs Susan Gibson Carter Award The recipient of this award need not be a member of the

Cascade United Methodist Church A GPA of 2.5 is required, and the applicant must show active participation in church and community activities While, students from Thomaston and Cedartown, GA are given preference for these awards, other

applicants may be considered The application must include an official transcript, two letters of recommendation and an essay The Carters coordinates this award and works with the local Upson Lee and Cedartown High School counselor’s office to identify candidates for the award

Andrew & Ernestine Curry Award

This award is in memory of Mr Andrew Curry, III, a devoted member of Cascade United Methodist Church It is designed to support a deserving student who needs the assistance that a laptop can provide as he or she enters an undergraduate

institution

Mr Curry had an undeniable love for and an interest

in computer technology Therefore, his wife, Mrs Ernestine Curry and family, established this lap top award in 2005 in order to create an opportunity for a disadvantaged student (male or female) to

embrace the world of technology, as he/she pursues a degree at an institution of higher learning Hence, Andy’s desire to teach the world through technology becomes a living legacy through this award Mrs Joi Hall along with the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee coordinate this award

Albany State University Memorial Award honoring Mr Samuel Deas

Albany State University was established in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute to train black youth in southwest Georgia The University is the second oldest public historically black college in Georgia and is

an affiliate of the University System of Georgia

Mrs Samuelyn Deas–Goseer established and funded The Albany State University Samuel Deas Grant in 2000 in honor of Mr Samuel Deas, her late father Mr Deas was a remarkable family and Christian man Employed at the Little White House in Warm Springs, GA, for more than twenty-five years, Mr Deas encouraged all three of his children and many young people in the community to go

to college He was a faithful member of Cascade United Methodist Church for many years He sang in two choirs, worked with the Boy Scouts, and participated with the Torchbearers Because of his firm commitment to his Sunday School Class, a class is named in his honor at the church

The recipient must be a fulltime student enrolled at Albany State University Mrs

Samuelyn Deas–Goseer and the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee coordinate this award

Mrs Doris Magee Deckard Award

This award is in memory of Mrs Doris Magee Deckard Mrs Deckard was a lifelong native of Louisiana After graduating from Washington Parish State High School in Franklinton, Louisiana, she matriculated at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana A premier historically black university founded in 1869, Dillard is committed to providing students with a quality four-year liberal arts education In 2010, Dillard,

a fully accredited private university, was ranked among the nation’s Top 10 HBCUs by the U.S News & World Report based on their comprehensive undergraduate studies Mrs Deckard actively supported her alma mater through the Dillard University National Alumni Association

Mrs Deckard was a bright young woman who graduated from Dillard in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education She moved to Shreveport, Louisiana and joined the Caddo Parish School Board as a teacher, where she had an illustrious career spanning 30 years

A devout Methodist her entire life, she was a faithful member of St Paul United Methodist Church in Shreveport for over fifty years After moving to Georgia in 2009, she transferred her membership to Cascade United Methodist Church In 2013, a book award was

established in her honor to support eligible students attending Dillard University and

majoring in Education Her daughter, Mrs Vickie Deckard Lee, coordinates this award

Marcia Lynne Clark Dell Award

Ms Dell received a B.S in Computer Science from DeVry University and a M.A from Central Michigan University This award was established to support college freshmen and 1st

year graduate students who have an interest in law or law enforcement

Ms Dell was a 32-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department and retired as Sergeant in 2010 Ms Dietre J Sutton coordinates this award

Rev Valerie Johnson Earvin Endowed

Memorial Award

The late Rev Valerie Johnson Earvin was a graduate of Clark Atlanta University and the Interdenominational Theological Seminary The was the Director of Operations for the

Cascade United Methodist Church when she transistioned as the result of a tragic automobile accident in 2002 Members

of the Cascade family and friends established an endowned scholarship in her honor in 2002 to provide an incentive for a student attending Clark Atlanta university and majoring in music

The recipient of this award need not be a member of the Cascade United Methodist Church A GPA of 2.5 is required, and the applicant must show active participation in church and community activities The application must include an official transctipt, two letter so frecommendation and an essay The Scholarship sub Committee of the Higher Education and Campus Ministry coordinates this award

Christopher Redding Edwards &

Erin Victoria Edwards Award

This award is in honor of Christopher Redding and Erin Victoria Edwards Both are graduates of Woodward Academy in Atlanta, Ga Christopher was a proud graduate of Elon College in Elon, NC and Erin Victoria was

a rising Junior at Boston College in Boston Massachusetts

This award is designed to recognize the legacy, dedication, and humanity demonstrated throughout their lives The recipients of such award must demonstrate high character, kindness, service, diversity, and an inclusive spirit

Mary Helen Norris &

William Fields Memorial Award

Mrs Mary Helen Norris Fields graduated from High School in Jackson, GA in 1966 She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Morris Brown College in 1970 Mrs Fields furthered her studies at Clark Atlanta University She began her career in Early Childhood Development in Lithonia, GA This would be the beginning of her lifelong work with children In 1972, she became a caseworker with Fulton County Family and Children Services She had the opportunity to work in several areas within the department before being

promoted to a supervisory position

She was a member of the NAACP, Veltre Community, and the South Metro Alumni

Chapter of the Morris Brown College Alumni Association This award was established in memory of Mrs Fields by her many friends and husband, Mr William H Fields, in March

2004 Mr Marks Fields is the coordinator of this award

Herman D Fryer Award

Herman Donald Fryer (November 26, 1948 – September 3, 2013) was a dedicated father and an exceptional musician, poet, and artist He was a graduate of T.W Josey High School

in 1966 He displayed his musical talents for several local churches and gospel groups He often shared his artistry and writing poetry He retired as a musician from Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Appling, GA

Perhaps his greatest gift was the gift of laughter His personality would easily light up a room His charming wit, humor, and affability spoke volumes to his character but his faith was deeply rooted in Christ His laughter, smile, and the precious memories he left our family is deserving of honor for any child

to continue to pursue their education and chase after their dreams That was always his intent and his shared words of wisdom

His devoted wife, Leona Williams Fryer, his son Steven D Fryer, and the Fryer family in his honor establish this award in his name It is awarded to students in the fields of music, art,

or poetry The Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee along with the Fryer family coordinate this award

Johnny W Fryer Award

Johnny Walter Fryer (September 24, 1922 – April 14, 2018) was a dedicated father and grandfather He entered the United States Navy during World War II serving under President Franklin D Roosevelt During his time of service,

he received medals for American Area, Asiatic-Pacific, and Victory World War II After his Honorable Discharge from his military service, he served in law enforcement as the first African-American deputy sheriff in Richmond County, Georgia He would later serve as a Paint and Body Instructor for 22 years at Augusta Technical College until he retired in 1987

He was a talented musician and played as the lead saxophonist in the Willie Wilson Combo He served faithfully as a Deacon at Carpentersville Baptist Church in North Augusta, SC and could be seen accompanying the Senior Choir His favorite hobby was playing checkers and it kept his mind sharp He was a man fiercely loyal to protecting his family and shared his own idea of helping

establish the criteria for this award He is a Veteran worthy of recognition of his heroic fight for freedom around the world His personal philanthropy is what he would like to share to assist in some way to help further our youth towards their educational endeavors

This award is established in his name by his children and grandchildren in his honor It is awarded to students dedicated to law enforcement, music, military service, and/or law practices The Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee along with the Fryer family coordinate this award

Kenneth Douglas Fryer Award

The Kenneth D Fryer Award is named in honor of Kenneth Douglas Fryer This award is to honor scholars who have volunteered their time with special needs individuals, raising special needs individuals, or are pursuing studies in mental health Mental health is an issue within the Black community that needs to be addressed not ignored “Kenny D“ is a warm and joyful person of good character and is honored

to help contribute in any way to the education of the next generation of leaders in the above field

Mary Fryer-Smith Award

Mary G Fryer-Smith (October 6, 1924 – July 14, 2013) was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and wife to Johnny W Fryer She served as a dietitian for several years at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia and worked tirelessly in her community She was an active member

in her children’s PTA, the Red Rose Auxiliary, the March

of Dimes, and the New Era Baptist Convention She later married the late Reverend William C Smith and was active as First Lady at Shiloh Baptist Church in Jonesboro Georgia, and Fortson Memorial Baptist Church in

Dahlonega, Georgia and served on the Mother’s Board and choir

This award is established in her name by her children and grandchildren in her honor It is awarded to students dedicated to community service, volunteer work, and humanitarian efforts The Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee along with the Fryer family coordinate this award

Wilbur and Addie B Garner

Memorial Award

This award is in memory of Wilbur E and Addie B Garner, Sr Mr and Mrs Garner were married for over thirty-five years They worked tirelessly, raising and supporting their family As parents of five children, they knew the importance of education and the

impact it can make on your life

This award supports incoming college freshmen pursuing higher education The recipient does not have to be a member of Cascade UMC The award is coordinated

by their children; Dr Wilbur Garner, Jr., Mr Curtis Garner, Sr., Mr Alfred Garner;

Mrs Gail Williams and Mrs Brenda Burgman

Sylvia Gilstrap Memorial Grant Award

This award was established to honor the memory of Sylvia Eloise Gilstrap Mrs Gilstrap was born April 11,

1936, into a lineage of longtime educators, which inspired a lifelong thirst for knowledge

A woman of God Mrs Gilstrap and her family joined Cascade United Methodist Church in 1978 Mrs

Gilstrap served in the Gospel Choir, the Mass Choir and attended the Coffee Breaks of Faith Bible Study class

This award is coordinated by her son and daughter law Ronald & Marian Gilstrap

in-Grace Family Award in honor of Mr James and

Mrs Mary Thomas Grace

Ms Chaquetta Grace was a recipient of Cascade United Methodist Church scholarship awards throughout her college and graduate school matriculation In New York, she has successfully worked as a Microbiologist, a Histocompatibility Technologist, a Flow Cytometry QC Specialist, and currently works as a Clinical Immunology Laboratory Supervisor with the Mount Sinai Health

System Ms Grace established this award to honor her parents, James and Mary Grace, on the occasion of their 25th Wedding Anniversary

The goal of this award is to provide assistance to other young women pursuing academic excellence in various scientific disciplines Her parents were her major

supporters and inspiration throughout her matriculation

at Fort Valley State University and Long Island University,

Mr Samuel L Gude, Jr Endowed Award

Mr Samuel Gude, Jr., is a retired Aircraft Parts Supervisor from the Robins Air force Base in Warner Robbins, Georgia While not a college graduate, Mr Gude instilled the value of education in his children and supported each of them through their

undergraduate studies In gratitude for his support and encouragement, Mr Samuel Gude, III established an endowed scholarship in honor of his father in 2003 in order to provide an incentive for students entering the field of math, science, or engineering Mr Gude along with the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee coordinate this award

Mrs Zenobia Gude Endowed Award

Mrs Zenobia Gude is a graduate of Albany State University She is a retired Warner Robins, Georgia, elementary school teacher Mrs Gude is a strong advocate for education and worked diligently to instill the value of education in all who came under her power

Mr Samuel Gude, III, established an endowed scholarship in honor of his mother in 2000 in order to provide an incentive for students entering the field of math, science, or engineering Mr Gude along with the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee coordinate this award

Dr Fredrick Hall Memorial Award

Dr Hall was one of the first chairs of the Higher Education Ministry at Cascade He was a retired professor of drama at Spelman College

This award was named in his honor in 1999 and is coordinated by Ms Bernice Hall and the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee

University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Memorial Award

honoring Mrs Lillie Mae Hall-Wilson

This book award is in honor of our family matriarch’s lifelong love for books and for the University of Arkansas

at Pine Bluff (formerly Arkansas A M & N College or

Mr Taj Jabar Hilton Memorial Award

Mrs Carolyn Byrd established this award in 1999 in memory

of her late nephew, Mr Taj Bonilla Hilton, who perished in a

Gary M Holmes Memorial Award

The late Gary M Holmes was born February 3, 1943, into a family that placed a premium on education His parents expected that he would attend college

immediately after high school, but he decided instead

to join the Air Force After a brief period of service with

an honorable discharge, Gary wanted to go to college He enrolled at Johnson C Smith University and was there for just a year when he transferred to Morris Brown College There he began the long journey to graduation, working and going to school part-time Although the going was slow, he never quit and graduated in 1969

Gary had a long and distinguished career in public service He served as Director of Housing for the City of Atlanta and afterwards Chief of Economic

Development, spearheading the City’s participation in the redevelopment of Underground Atlanta After retiring from public service in 1990,

he established Gary M Holmes and Associates, a consulting firm specializing in

governmental affairs He operated the business until his premature death in

September 2002

He served on the boards of Morris Brown College, Zoo Atlanta, the One Ninety One Club, Gate City Nursery Association, and the Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated

The Gary M Holmes “Going Back” Scholarship was established by his wife Margie, and daughter Candace Holmes Fernandes, to honor a man who was steadfast in his pursuit of a college degree, and who worked tirelessly to make it possible for others to reach this goal Ms Margie C Holmes coordinates this award

Kenneth Hudson Award

Mr Kenneth S Hudson, a talented, multi-functional, and multi-faceted individual, was born and educated in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

multi-He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, and returned to Pittsburgh to teach elementary school students for several years He also attended the University of Pittsburgh where he studied retail management

Mr Hudson worked for Coca-Cola USA for 22 years where he was Vice

President of Marketing Development and Director of Sports Promotions/Community Relations He also served as General Manager of a full-service radio station, WILD, and Vice President-Community Affairs for the Boston Celtics Limited Partnership

Mr Kenneth Hudson established a scholarship in 1999 in order to provide incentives for freshmen and sophomore students of Cascade, and outreach students who are

active in church youth groups and school organizations Ms Patricia Varnell

coordinates this award

Lucy C Jackson Memorial Award

This award is designed to support students with an interest in education and plans to attend (or attends) either Fisk University or Ft Valley State University This award is given by Gwendolyn J Campbell in memory of her mother, Lucy C Jackson, who was a teacher for over 37 years This award is coordinated by the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee

Mrs Thelma L Jarrett Endowed Award

Finding herself a widow at the age of 28 and the mother

of five children under the age of seven, Mrs Thelma Jarrett saw education as the means of making a better life for herself and her children Once her youngest son entered kindergarten, she enrolled part-time in an undergraduate program at the University of Buffalo

At the age of 40, Mrs Jarrett graduated with a degree in special education She, thereafter, devoted her life to teaching and advocating for the proper education

of children with learning and behavioral disabilities Mrs Lynn Jarrett-Gude established this award in 2003 in honor

This award is given to support students attending The Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) whose interests include Christian Education, Counseling, and Pastoral Care

Horace T Lamback Award

Horace T Lamback Sr (May 6, 1949 – April 22, 2016) was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather

He was an active member of Carpentersville Baptist Church in North Augusta, SC where he served in several capacities including Chairman of the Trustee Board, Deacon Board, Finance Committee, Pastor’s Appreciation Committee, Building Fund, and

coordinated the building of the new church After graduating high school, he received a B.S degree from Voorhees College in 1971, a M.Ed in

Counseling, Administration and Supervision from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC in

1978, and an E.Ds in Administration and Supervision from Tuskegee Institute in 1982

He was a charter member of the Sigma Theta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc at Voorhees College in the Fall of 1970 and remained an active member for 46 years He served as a teacher, principal, and administrator at several area schools in Georgia and South Carolina He later joined the Cambridge College administrative staff in Augusta, GA as Assistant to the Director

He had a distinguished career serving his community in several capacities such as the NAACP, Richmond County Association of Educators (RCAE), National Education Association (NEA), Georgia Association of Educators (GAE), National Association of Black School Educators (NABSE), Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and other

distinguished organizations

This book scholarship was established in his name by his devoted wife of 39 years, Gwendolyn Fryer Lamback, his children Tonya Johnson, Dr Timeka L Cline, and

Horace T Lamback, Jr and the Lamback and Fryer families in his honor It is awarded

At the age of twelve, Rev Terri Lemons accepted Christ as her savior The Lord orders the steps of this anointed pastor, teacher and counselor The Bible and the Holy Spirit have guided her life, spiritual growth and call into ministry The Holy Spirit led Pastor Lemons

to read Isaiah 61:1, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach to the poor…heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and open the prison to those who are bound.” She accepted her call to the ministry and was ordained an Elder in Full Connection by the North Georgia United Methodist Conference, and was appointed associate pastor at Cascade United Methodist Church Rev Lemons graduated with honors and received her Master of Divinity degree from Gammon Theological Seminary at The

Ms Lillie M Robbins Endowed Memorial Award

honoring McKinley & Ella Robbins

Ms Lillie M Robbins is a graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro, North Carolina, and Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta

University) She retired from Federal Service as

a GS-14 Supervisory Civil Rights Investigator/Team Leader

Her parents, McKinley and Ella Robbins, were only able to complete sixth and eighth

grade, respectively However, the high values they placed on education inspired all 11 of their surviving children to graduate high school with most completing their

baccalaureate degrees

Ms Robbins was the first individual at Cascade to establish a scholarship The

Scholarship is now endowed, and she awards two to three $1,000 scholarships

annually in honor of her parents and to provide incentives for freshmen students,

preferably from Cascade, who plan to attend North Carolina A & T State University

Annie L Robertson had a passion for educating children and young adults God anointed her with spiritual wisdom and understanding to seek, nurture, and develop young minds to reach their fullest potential The glory of God was displayed with her students through her knowledge, faith, compassion, discipline, and love Mrs Ann believed strongly

in the slogan, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”, particularly for our African-American children Therefore, her students exceeded all expectations while striving for excellence in any task assigned

Many years ago, Mrs Ann helped to establish a college scholarship program at her church in Tampa, Florida As a teacher, Annie L Robertson laid a solid foundation of education for many students The evidence of her passion toward higher education is seen by the success of her daughters, Dr

On March 30, 2008, Ms Mary S Newby, the former chair of the Outreach Division of Cascade United Methodist Church decided to establish an award in memory of her sister, Ora S Sheppard, fondly called

"Dee Dee” by family and friends

Mrs Sheppard was a registered nurse in the state of Ohio Even as a wife, mother of three and employed full-time, she pursued her interest in nursing and studied to progress from a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to a registered nurse (RN) Her nursing career spanned more than a quarter century This award is coordinated by Mary S Newby and the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee

Wayman R Smith Memorial Award

Wayman Smith was a long time Cascade UMC member and active member of the Christian Education ministry Wayman valued education

He returned to school to earn his M.S in Anthropology in 2010 and became an adjunct

professor at Georgia State University’s Georgia Perimeter College

Wayman, along with his wife and daughters, realized the burden that finances can play

in keeping some from getting

a post-secondary education This scholarship was established in honor of Wayman to help reduce some of that burden His wife, Wanda Smith and the Higher Education and Campus Ministry

Carol Waddy serves as Director of Corporate Social Responsibility and Strategic

Engagement for Chick-fil-A, Inc and the Chick-fil-A Foundation where she leads a team devoted to removing barriers to opportunity for underserved communities and youth She is responsible for Chick-fil-A’s public/private partnerships, revitalization initiatives, civic engagement and corporate volunteerism Carol received a Bachelor

of Arts from Tuskegee University and a Master of Public Administration from Clark Atlanta University She also has additional post-graduate studies toward a PhD at Georgia State University

DePriest and Carol are also seasoned entrepreneurs In addition to their corporate careers, they are also co-owners of a successful property and forestry management company with holdings across the Southeastern U.S The Waddys have been married over 25 years and live in East Cobb They have an adult daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter in Missouri

DePriest and Carol established this award as a tribute to Carol’s parents who were career educators and as an incentive to stimulate growth of African American
