Western Michigan University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work on a Howard
Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Education Project “Developing Scientists as Teachers; Developing Students as Scientists: A Dual Approach to Transforming the Culture of Undergraduate Biology Education.” The project has two broad program elements. (1)
Professional Development through learning communities for faculty, teaching assistants, and
undergraduate peer leaders. Facilitation of a science teaching journal club, a “scientists as teachers” speaker series, and summer workshops with follow up that includes on‐site
classroom‐based support and feedback from peers and experts. (2) Curriculum Development
through incorporation of multiple research experiences for all biology majors so that students see themselves as scientists from early in their undergraduate program through the end. The classroom will be transformed into a scientific community where students are scientists: asking questions, conducting investigations, and generating and communicating evidence‐based arguments to their peers.
The postdoctoral research associate will be supervised by Dr. John Geiser in the Department of Biological Sciences. The successful applicant will play a leadership role in project
implementation, assessment, and dissemination. The successful applicant will help organize and direct the learning communities, assist in curriculum development, analysis of learning outcomes and persistence of students in the department of Biological Sciences. The fellow will also help organize the HHMI scientist and teacher speaker series as well as the summer
workshops.
A candidate who has expertise in undergraduate biology teaching and who can lead efforts in faculty/TA development is preferred. The candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. in STEM education or a related field. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in and experience in the study and/or promotion of STEM education reform at the post‐secondary level.
Appointments are full time and will be made for a period of up to two years. Salary is
competitive, depending on qualifications and experience. The start date for the position is flexible, with the option to start as early as June 1, 2015. Review of applications will begin as received and will continue until the position is filled.
