The purpose of this proposal is to offset educational costs to graduate students enrolled in the The purpose of this project is to provide Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship support for 24 students enrolled at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) in the Master of Science in Nursing program, Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) concentration for the 2012-13 and 37 students in the 2013-2014 academic year for a total of 53 students The project aims to incorporate community based health promotion education and screening awareness in the FNP program within the
framework of the chronic disease care model Traineeships provide partial remission of the cost
of tuition, fees, and books for students pursuing FNP training and wishing to deliver care to diverse communities in the South Puget Sound region of Pierce and surrounding counties of Washington State (Chelan and Yakima) Successful funding of this grant has the capacity to change the education of FNPs and move health promotion education into the community where it can generate the most benefits for patients and the community at large
The population of the United States and Washington continue to become more diverse and more people than ever suffer from chronic diseases Unfortunately, health care visits for chronic
disease management have become longer, yet less time is spent on preventative health education that has the potential to make a positive impact on improving the health of the population
Schools of nursing must partner with communities to provide culturally competent, community based clinical experiences in health promotion that are capable of increasing the visibility of FNP
as experts in health and improve the health of communities
FNP students at Pacific Lutheran University will develop, implement, and evaluate community based service projects that focus on health promotion education and recommended screenings and referrals to local primary care providers in medically underserved areas Service projects will
be developed and implemented by teams of graduate FNP and undergraduate nursing students This project has the following objectives:
1) Educate FNP students on health promotion within the chronic disease care model
2) Plan health outreach service projects that incorporate the role of the FNP with
underserved communities
3) Provide graduate and undergraduate community based health promotion education, selected health screenings, chronic disease education and referrals to primary care
providers from a mobile health unit
4) Increase the number of URM students currently enrolled in the baccalaureate program to seek graduate education as a primary care APN
5) Increase the number of FNP students practicing with medically underserved/rural areas and patients
6) Increase the visibility of APNs as a source of expert health care knowledge among
medically underserved areas
