There was much to celebrate this past year at Rainier Scholars With our largest high school class to date earning
record rates of acceptance to top-tier colleges around the country, our earlier-start scholars enrolling in record
numbers into independent and highly-capable public school programs, academic achievement rising across all phases
of our program and student leadership abounding at all ages, the Rainier Scholars mission focus on opportunity and
access remained strong and clear
We could not have done it without your support
Access to opportunity matters We know it can launch lives of economic
stability, leadership and influence in consequential decision-making arenas,
and can be a conduit through which generational poverty can be broken and
new pathways can be forged
In a 2014 National Bureau of Economic Research study, we learned that while, for middle and upper class students,
access to highly selective colleges and universities has a negligible economic impact on their future lives, for
low-income Black and Latino students whose parents have limited education, the impact is profound and offers the best
opportunity for moving from the bottom 20% of the economic ladder to the top 20% over one generation
In other words, access matters most for those least likely to have it
We know that it takes our entire community to create pathways of access and opportunity for our scholars
The system is not set up for someone to overcome barriers of race, class and generational privilege without
some intentional interventions, structure and programming to disrupt the status quo; the flow of
the river must be interrupted to change course in any meaningful way
Thank you for joining with staff, parents, school partners and the scholars themselves to carve out new
pathways of opportunity for so many of our young people in this community As we head into our
20th anniversary year, may we celebrate the investment made by all, which will pay infinitely greater
dividends for our community, city and region in the years to come
