a half years has built philanthropic momentum with the power to change lives — for students, faculty and our campus communities This heart for others has perhaps never been more important in allowing us to deliver the Marquette experience

Dear Marquette Community,

In the mid-19th century, Milwaukee’s first archbishop, The Reverend John Martin Henni, traveled overseas to raise funds for his dream to create an “academy of learning” in his city

During his visits, Archbishop Henni inspired a $16,000 gift from a Belgian businessman to further this pursuit Decades later, on August 28, 1881, Marquette College opened to serve the growing immigrant population

Since our founding as Milwaukee’s Catholic, Jesuit university, we have carried forward Archbishop Henni’s pioneering spirit and resilience through academic excellence, our active faith,

a commitment as men and women for others and as leaders making a difference in society

Marquette continued to blaze a trail in 1909, becoming the first Catholic university in the world to admit women We launched one of the nation’s first engineering co-op programs long before internships existed, and during the civil rights movement in 1969, we started a now nationally recognized Educational Opportunity Program We also lead through centers like the Les Aspin Center for Government and, to this day, Marquette serves as the only School of Dentistry in Wisconsin

Today, we stand on Marquette’s firm foundation amid challenging times, and we look ahead

to our bright future I’m pleased to introduce Time to Rise: The Marquette Promise to

Be The Difference This $750 million comprehensive campaign — our most ambitious in

university history — seeks to usher in a new era of philanthropy that galvanizes our alumni, parents and friends like never before This is a campaign for everyone that has the power to create a Marquette culture of giving for generations

CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVES:

1 Rev Stanislaus P Lalumiere, S.J., was one of Marquette’s founding fathers who studied law under future President Abraham Lincoln before joining the Jesuits to work alongside Archbishop John Martin Henni in establishing Marquette College in 1881 He served

as university president from 1887-89.

2 In 1909, Marquette became the first Catholic university in the world to admit women Through expanding leadership in the 1920s and 30s —

to today’s programs like the Institute for Women’s Leadership, made possible by a gift from the Thomas J

Rolfs Foundation.

Teaching a different kind of leadership

Marquette offers students the chance to dive deeply into leadership development through our Excellence in Leadership program, or E-Lead A creation of Opus Engineering Dean Kris Ropella, the three-year E-Lead program immerses students in leading oneself, leading with others and leading innovation The nationally recognized program proved so successful, Marquette recently expanded it beyond Engineering to include students in all majors, thanks to a generous gift from National Campaign Co-chairs Chuck and Karen Swoboda

“I wanted to develop an identity as a leader,” says Mara, an E-Lead participant and student in Marquette’s Klingler College of Arts & Sciences “The E-Lead program provides in-depth leadership learning that you cannot get anywhere else

Nursing, reimagined

In a world that needs caregivers more than ever, we are investing in our caregivers like never before Marquette Nursing is growing rapidly in demand, and — thanks to a $31 million gift from alumni Darren and Terry Jackson — the university is exploring renovation options to ensure high-caliber classrooms, training and simulation spaces for future nurses

Marquette Nursing currently enrolls 1,287 students, including nearly 400 graduate students from our accelerated Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing program Overall, the college’s vision is to prepare 5,000 nurses over the next decade and beyond, including 1,000 diverse Marquette Nurses and leaders

in emerging areas like telehealth To advance this vision, beginning in fall 2021, more scholarships will be designated for underrepresented students accepted into the College of Nursing, ramping up to an eventual 80 scholarships per year

Bringing data to life

Part of innovation is pivoting toward opportunity and vision As a leading Catholic university in data sciences, Marquette lives this daily It’s part of why we

collaborated to launch the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute — to power Milwaukee as a technology hub

Pursuing the science that heals

Marquette’s College of Health Sciences interacts with approximately 10 percent

of the university’s undergraduates through its Biomedical Sciences major alone

Many of these students also gain valuable research experience working alongside faculty like Dr Murray Blackmore (pictured below) — one of the nation’s foremost spinal cord researchers He and his research team study regenerative ability

in neurons — a potential breakthrough in treating paralysis Feats like this are possible thanks to gifts like those from the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation

The future of business and innovation leadership

Located on the site of the former McCormick Hall at 16th Street and Wisconsin Avenue, Marquette’s new state-of-the-art facility for business and innovation leadership will build on our strong foundation of nationally ranked programs including Real Estate, Finance, Supply Chain, Accounting, and Part-time and Executive MBA Anchoring campus’ west gateway, the facility will reach new heights as a dynamic hub for students, faculty, alumni and the business community

The $60 million project will be the largest fully donor-funded construction initiative in university history The 100,000-square-foot facility will feature collaborative spaces, wrap-around student support and Marquette’s expanded Excellence in Leadership (E-Lead) program

Humanities at our core

The Helen Way Klingler College of Arts & Sciences is the intellectual heart

of Marquette With more than 40 majors and minors spanning 13 academic departments — including Theology — as well as Marquette’s Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC programs, the college is also home to seven outstanding academic centers, including the Advancement of the Humanities, Cyber Security Awareness and Cyber Defense, Peacemaking, and the Les Aspin Center for Government

The university is also piloting a Civic Dialogues program to bring together faculty, students and community partners in the deliberative and honest exchange of diverse viewpoints about pressing contemporary challenges

We believe the program can serve as a national model, demonstrating how institutions like Marquette can share research and expertise to improve understanding and strengthen civic relationships in a time of increasing

Revitalizing student success

We have faith in our students and put that belief into action with initiatives that bolster their success, maximize retention and elevate the transformational student experience Whether through college-specific scholarships, our

Educational Opportunity Program — one of the nation’s first — or the RISE orientation program to welcome underrepresented student populations, holistic student support remains a top university-wide priority

Our expanded Urban Scholars Program offers 40 full-tuition, four-year scholarships annually to high-achieving, low-income scholars from high schools in the Milwaukee area The university’s new “Equity in MKE” fund allows donors to support Urban Scholars and other scholarship recipients through room-and-board funding so students can fully immerse in the Marquette experience

Amid the economic uncertainty of the pandemic, our Bridge to the Future fund also remains instrumental in providing emergency funding to help students remain at Marquette

High-impact experiential learning like internships, student research and international study elevates the Marquette experience while preparing students for success in their chosen career paths in partnership with our excellent counseling, advising and mentoring services

Preserving a sacred treasure

Spaces speak to us There are few at Marquette that speak as distinctly as the St Joan of Arc Chapel It is the spiritual anchor of campus — cherished

by students, alumni, faculty and visitors across generations — and a physical reminder of the faith-based heroism of its 15th-century namesake Yet, even stone as strong as the courage and faith of Joan of Arc requires upkeep after 600-plus years Marquette has launched a significant $3 million preservation effort

as part of Time to Rise to address immediate needs such as roofing, security and

temperature control vital to the integrity of our medieval masterpiece
