CC’S LIBERAL ARTS IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES
PROGRAM CONTINUES WITH $60,000 GRANT
Faculty teach courses to incarcerated young adults
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo — April 19, 2019 — Colorado College’s “Liberal Arts in Correctional Facilities” initiative is now entering its third year and Denver’s PB and K Family Foundation has awarded the program a three-year, $60,000 seed grant aimed at sustaining Colorado College’s contribution through in-prison education
LACF has since raised another $15,000 and is seeking further funds to secure the long-term future of this educational contribution to the public good
Under this program, part of the college’s Collaborative for Community
Engagement, Colorado College faculty offer core liberal arts courses at no cost to either incarcerated men and women or to the Colorado Department
of Corrections
CC Professor of History Carol Neel notes, “This program is an opportunity for Colorado College to extend the benefits of a liberal arts perspective to
incarcerated individuals as well as to model for our students that
responsiveness to community needs is a fundamental part of educational privilege.”
CC faculty teach in Pueblo at the Youthful Offender System, a
medium-security correctional facility with strong educational and therapeutic
programs for individuals in their late teens and early 20s
Trang 2Many national studies demonstrate the effectiveness of education in curbing recidivism and opening pathways to success for offenders returning to
society CC’s program at YOS, a collaboration with Pueblo Community
College, serves these goals
Through PCC, students receive credit guaranteed to transfer to any public college or university in Colorado Courses
offered include introductory humanities, writing for undergraduate success, and college math
