The preserve is located in South Campus between
Roth Quad and the Marine Sciences Research
Center, between Marburger Drive and Nicolls
Road It can be easily accessed through pathways
located on the south side of Circle Road (formerly
South Loop Road) from Roth Quad and just north
of Nassau Hall near the Marine Sciences Research
Center Blue signs mark the trail heads

was a dedicated and
popular professor of political
science and avowed naturalist
during Stony Brook University's
formative years He died
unexpectedly at the age of 37
in the early fall of 1969, leaving
behind a wife and young family
In 1970 a 26-acre woodland, lined
with oak and maple trees and
often walked by Professor Schiff
and his students, was set aside to
honor him This nature preserve
was dedicated in his memory to
be "forever wild" by former U.S
Interior Secretary Stewart Udall
and Stony Brook University
The Friends of The Ashley Schiff Park Preserve:
• Seek permanent protection of the forest preserve so that it shall remain "forever wild"
• Raise funds for student scholarships and maintenance of the park
• Develop educational outreach programs, teach-ins, and nature walks for the University and the community
By becoming a Friend you will be making an investment in the future of the park You will gain a heightened appreciation of forest ecosystems after visiting the preserve with your friends and family, you will discover how natural areas on campus enhance opportunities for learning, and you will gain knowl-edge about forest conservation and the rich variety of life our earth supports

• Permanent protection to ensure that the park will never be developed or otherwise compromised
• Use of the preserve for academic teaching and research activities
• Identification and conservation of the fauna and flora of the preserve
• A student scholarship fund in environmental studies related
to conservation

in the preserve
