POSITION DESCRIPTION
HandsOn Kansas State (HOKS) was created by the Kansas State University Student Governing Association to support volunteer and service efforts of the campus and community Manhattan Good Neighbors (MGN) is a part of HOKS whose focus is bridging the gap between campus and community relationships MGN promotes civic engagement within the City of Manhattan to develop educated leaders to serve the community The Senior Assistance program is a part of HOKS that collaborates with the Senior Center of Manhattan to assist elderly citizens to help build relationships
Senior Assistants are expected to participate in a volunteer orientation session at the beginning of the semester.
Following this, advisors will make visits to the Riley County Senior Center either weekly or biweekly depending
on availability As a Senior Assistant volunteer, you will be given the opportunity to participate in several volunteer activities at the Riley County Senior Center such as technology assistance, helping with events at the senior center, and playing games such as bingo with the residents The purpose of a Senior Assistant is to build relationships with elderly citizens at the Riley County Senior Center and to help the organization in areas of need Senior assistant sessions will take place throughout the week depending on schedule of events and availability of the volunteer Assistants will be given first priority to be added to our Senior Resident Assistance volunteer list in which volunteers will have the opportunity to help senior citizens throughout the Manhattan area with various tasks such as leaf raking and snow shoveling on an as-need basis
Responsibilities:
• Attend pre-service orientation/workshop
• Attend group meetings once a semester
• Communicate vital information to Student Program Coordinators
• Adhere to program policies and procedures as well as those of the placement site
• Provide effective advising and other direct service activities weekly
Qualifications:
• Be interested in working with senior citizens
• Dependable and dedicated to completing tasks
• Be responsible, reliable, and a positive role model
• Have a clean criminal history
• Experience with volunteering and community service
Time Commitment: Be eligible and commit to one full year
Volunteer at least 1-1.5 hours per week Attend group meetings once a semester
