How to write an OVERVIEW ( 2 main features)
- Identify key features:
+ search for the biggest & smallest slices
+ find out which slices became bigger/ smaller/ unchanged/ disappear
- Make comparisons
+ use “while/ whereas/ however”
+ use superlative
Synonyms for superlatives
was the smallest (biggest) segment = contributed the least (most) to = made the lowest (highest)
contribution = made up the smallest (biggest) part of the chart = was the least (most) significant part of

It is evident/ obvious/ clear that… As can be seen from the graph, ….

Trang 2BODY PARAGRAPH (Body 1 & Body 2)
- Examine all pies and search for the slices with the similarities (increasing slices, decreasing slices or
unchanged) Increasing slices are into 1 group (Body 1), and decreasing slices and unchanged are for the
other group (Body 2)
- Make comparisons at specific slices
+ with the other slices within one same pie if possible (use superlative sentence)
Ex: Fossil fuels gained the most/ least amount to the main source of energy
+ or/ and compare to other pies if possible (use “while/ whereas” sentence)
Ex: In 1992 construction sector was the largest country’s income, accounting for 32 percent while 2002 service made the most contribution occupying nearly one third of the total revenue
- To make it easy to write, begin with the BIGGEST slice to SMALLEST slice in similarity (increasing or
decreasing slices)
- Notice unchangeable slices or disappeared slices
- Use variety of saying percentage
DON’T
- Include all percentages of all slices (but each slice must be mentioned at least once)
- Write a descriptive report by simply listing and naming percentages, but select the key features and make comparisons
