The legs provide a strong base for your body and offer you support Just like a house, if you do nothave a solid foundation, your overall appearance will be weak When standing, you want to makesure you keep your feet at shoulders’ width apart Your toes should be pointing slightly outward,which helps with your balance
A great exercise to test your foundation is to have a friend gently poke you in the chest with theirfinger If you fall backwards or need to take a step to rebalance yourself, your foundation is weak.Keep trying this test until you no longer move when poked This is the solid foundation you need andshould display throughout the day Remember, if you have a weak foundation you will have an overallweak appearance

chest is a signal of strength for males and a signal of attraction for females Failure to display properbody language habits with your chest will significantly impact your appearance The chest is alsoresponsible for regulating your breathing habits, which we will cover a bit later If you do not have anopen and exposed chest, you will not be breathing properly This will raise cortisol production inyour body and subsequently your anxiety levels An open chest promotes strong breathing patterns andwill lower your anxiety levels So if you find yourself feeling nervous, try opening up your chest andbreathing slowly
A closed chest is one of the most common body language problems that people experience Closingand protecting your chest is a natural instinct to keep your vital organs safe After thousands of years
of evolution, we naturally protect the heart, which happens to be a very important vital organ, when
we feel anxiety When we are faced with a new, dangerous, or uncomfortable situation, our first
instinct is to close our chest or protect ourselves with our arms You will see this phenomenon all thetime in clubs and other social settings Most people will block their chests with their drinks, arms, orpurses This is a key sign that they are feeling uncomfortable with the situation When you approachsomeone with a closed chest, you subconsciously display anxiety and your partner will in turn mirrorthis and block their chest This leads to uncomfortable breathing patterns and a very awkward

The best way to keep your chest exposed is to slide your shoulder blades back and stick your chestout into the air Your arms should be slightly behind your chest Having an exposed chest displaysconfidence to the world and shows that you are not afraid of any threats Take a few deep breathsthrough your chest and breathe slowly This will release your anxiety and make you feel at ease in anysituation Make sure your spine is erect and straight Whenever you begin to feel anxiety or nerves,check your chest as you're most likely closing it Always make sure you are never crossing your arms
or covering your chest with your drink, purse, or papers and folders

How you display, control, and use your arms can also signal your overall confidence level Greatleaders use their arms to animate and inspire an audience Most people have trouble with their armsand move them in short, quick motions, making them appear anxious and unsettled Worse yet, theyfeel uncomfortable resting their arms on their body and will shift their arms around trying to find acomfortable spot
Many people, especially when speaking in public, will keep their arms stiff and at their sides Thismakes them look unnatural The best place for your arms is down by your sides, directly across fromyour navel This will give you a natural look and will also help promote positive breathing habits
We recommend that you keep both arms slightly bent and touching your hips across your navel Youcan also keep your hands on your belt or in your pockets, or clasp your hands together and hold themover your navel Be sure you never raise them and block your chest We also recommend claspingyour hands behind the small of your back This will lead to your chest sticking out and is a great way
to promote strong body language
When you are engage in conversation, we highly recommend you use your arms and hands to
emphasize different points and lighten your conversation You also want to make smooth and
controlled motions with your arms and hands Acting too quickly will make you seem nervous
Always move in a slow and controlled manner Think James Bond He moves in a cool and concisemanner with as little effort as possible

After your audience analyzes your base, chest, and arm position, they will begin to focus on yourhead They will analyze your head position and any head movements that you make Make sure thatyou keep your chin up and avoid dropping your head, which will signal a lower status and make itdifficult for you to lead Focusing on keeping your chin up and your chest out will quickly improveyour body language The saying, “Keep your chin up,” is popular for a reason
Controlled Breathing
The one aspect of body language that is constantly ignored, even by so called body language experts,
is breathing Breathing is imperative when you are trying to control both your anxiety levels and youroverall body image When you are feeling nervous, your body will flood your brain with adrenalineand cortisol These are the hormones that trigger your fight or flight reflexes When these chemicalsare released, you will feel anxiety, your heart rate will increase, your vocal pitch will raise, and youwill begin to speak faster All these factors will give you a nervous image Remember, we want you
to appear calm and confident You cannot achieve this image if you are not breathing properly
Breathing is a subconscious activity and very few people actually understand how to breathe
properly Unless you have taken yoga or meditation classes, you may never think about how you
breathe But if you can learn how to properly breathe, you can relax both your body and mind whenyou are feeling stress This will allow you to take your emotions out of tough decisions and insteaduse the logical side of your brain Studies have shown that when we are stressed, blood exits ourbrain and flows towards our muscles as we prepare to fight If you can reverse this trend, you canremain in control of any situation, no matter how stressful
There are many books that you can study on different breathing techniques, but we are going to
quickly go over a technique that will help you out immediately You first want to take a deep breath inthrough your nose Hold for three seconds and release through your mouth Try to breathe through yourstomach and navel region Expand your stomach when you breathe in and contract when you breatheout After five minutes of breathing through your stomach, you should switch to breathing through yourchest Expand your chest when you breathe in and make sure you slide your shoulder blades back Onthe exhale, contract your chest but keep your shoulder blades back It is very important to do theseexercises while standing and in a proper position

or when you meet a person for the first time If you can move your breathing habits from subconscious
to conscious, you will be able to control your anxiety levels If you can control your anxiety levels,you will have a much better chance of maintaining proper body language
Deep breathing exercises will automatically relax your body and you will find yourself in a morepowerful position If you want to try an experiment, put yourself in a poor body language position andtrying your breathing exercises It will be very difficult to breathe This is the reason that poor bodylanguage can impact your entire body It constrict your breathing, which leads to poor circulation and
an increase in cortisol production It’s a downward spiral and it all starts with proper body languageand breathing habits
