simple tick or tell can last only a brief second This will lead tofalse signals and information, which could allow you to jump to thewrong conclusions When first starting out, you should be focusing

on the big picture Focus on the person's overall body language anddemeanor As you become more seasoned, and can pick up the

What To Watch When Reading Someone's Body Language

There are a few different body parts and areas you should be

watching when reading somebody's body language The first thingyou should notice, is how the person positions their body How istheir posture? Are they standing straight with their chest out? Arethey covering their chest? How much space are they taking up withtheir body? These are all bigger picture questions that will allowyou to read the confidence of that individual Standing up straightwith their chest out, is a common trait of a confident individual whousually is a leader figure Slouched posture with hands coveringtheir heart, usually cross armed, will generally mean this individual

is shy or less confident We will go into greater detail later in thebook on how you can utilize each of these body language tells

Watch The Eyes

You are also going to be watching the eyes, when reading body

language The eyes can alert you to liars and people who are hidingthings from you By understanding where the eyes look when peopleare recalling information, you can understand whether they are

making something up or they are actually recalling information thatactually happened If your subjects eyes move up and to the left, theyare recalling something that they made up in their head Up and to theright, they are recalling information that is stored in their brain Liarsand people who are experiencing stress, are also know to have pooreye contact and generally will look around the room They will alsoblink more and have certain facial ticks So always remember towatch the eyes when you are evaluating body language

up You can see this phenomenon usually in a court room setting Amurderer will be talking about how they are sorry for killing

someone, but their facial expression will be one of self pleasureinstead of guilt So always watch for different facial expressions,and see if they are congruent with what the person is actually saying

How We Touch Ourselves And Different Objects

Nervous ticks are another part of body language that you need tobecome aware of Nervous people will usually have some sort oftick which you can use to figure just how they are feeling For

example, moving your leg up and down is a sign of nervousness oranticipation Cracking knuckles is a subliminal comfort techniquedesigned to try to relax the body You also need to take into accounthow people touch themselves when talking to you When someonecontinues to rub their nose, they are usually holding back somethingthey want to say A simple tug on the ear could mean that they areuncomfortable with their situation Supporting their head in theirhand, usually signals boredom or they are tired So if you see

someone doing this in a meeting or presentation, it might be time tomake things more interesting A few strokes of the chin could mean

they are interested and respect your thoughtfulness They might beginpondering the idea themselves This is a great tell if you are a

salesmen, as you now know that the client is beginning to buy yourpitch

Look At How They Position Their Body Distance Wise

The distance that people put between you and themselves is alsosomething that you should keep in mind when looking at body

language Distance represents the personal space that a person

requires and can actually tell you a lot about that person's

personality If you want to know the relationship between two

people, for example if they are dating or have slept together, justlook at the personal space they share If they are within one foot ofeach other, most likely they have a deeper personal relationship Theaverage personal space for different individuals is around 4 feet forpeople who have never met before If you find that somebody iscloser then four feet, this person may feel comfortable with you, orthey may even be attracted to you Further than four feet, this personmay feel uncomfortable around new people or uncomfortable aroundyou Also be aware of how you are interacting with that person'scomfort zone Some people may not appreciate it if you are

encroaching on their personal space

Body Language Basics That You Can Apply

There are also some body language basics that you need to be aware

of in your own life Your posture is the biggest correction that youneed to start making yourself aware of How you stand and movearound life, can say a lot about your confidence Make sure you stand

up straight with your shoulders back Stick your chest and try to take

up as much space as possible when walking around Move in a slowmanner and try to avoid fast movements Always be aware of whatyou are doing with your hands Try not to cross your arms or holdyour hand over your chest You will see the difference betweenconfident people and those who lack confidence in a club setting

Those with lower confidence, will hold their drinks over their chest.Having your chest exposed, is also an indication that you are willing

to interact with other people People will be more receptive to thistype of body language, and will be more willing to come up to youand start a conversation So always make sure you are watching yourown body language as well as watching others

Chapter 3: An In Depth Look At The Language Of Your Eyes

The eyes have been commonly referred to as the gateway to a

persons soul Eye contact is extremely important to build a sense oftrust and intimacy Unfortunately, many people have trouble lookingsomeone directly in the eye Direct eye contact could mean that

somebody is challenging you, or it could mean that they have yourfull attention Eye contact is especially important when you are

presenting, as eye contact will allow the audience to feel engagedand part of the presentation Your eyes are also very important incommunication and you find that you have little control over your eyemuscles when you are speaking This allows body language experts

to read your eyes and figure what exactly is your motive

The Direction Of The Eyes And What They Mean

The easiest body language tell to pick up on with regards to eyes, iswhat direction they move and look to when the subject is talking.This relates to the right and left side of the brain, each responsiblefor a different task The left side of the brain is mostly analytical andused for recalling memories and math skills The right side of ourbrain is creative and used in story telling and fictional writing Sohow can use this information when it comes to body language? Ifyour subject is looking right when you are asking them to recall afact, they might be making up a story You have to be attentive,

because it can be quick depending on how rehearsed the lie is for thesubject Children for example, can spend minutes looking up and tothe right when fabricating a story If the person you are reading looks

to the left, they are likely using the left side of the brain, which willallow them to recall facts that actually happened

You also need to keep an eye on the horizontal location of the

person's eyes to pick up on more tells If you are looking for a liar,then up and to the right is going to be the position you should watch.Eyes that move upwards, are recreating a visual event, which is mostlikely the situation you are asking about If their eyes move to theright and sideways, this means that they are imagining a sound Thismight be a false positive when it comes to somebody lying, so makesure you ask again Down and to the right indicates, is a signal thatthe person is being creative But down and to the right usually

doesn’t mean the person is lying Down and to the right, usually, willmean the person is questioning their feelings, and is trying to

creatively figure out where they stand This could mean the person ishiding something, but you are going to need other body languagesignals to confirm

Direct Eye Contact and How It Relates To Body Language

Eye contact is a great way to make sure you have the attention of theaudience you are speaking to, and also a great way to find out ifsomebody is attracted to you If you are giving a presentation, youcan usually find out who is interested by looking at their eyes If theireyes are wandering around the room or they are looking down at thefloor or desk, you need to energize your speech and find a new way

to get their attention Eye contact is also extremely important if youare in the sales field If you are receiving direct eye contact whenyou are giving your pitch, this means the customer is very interestedand you should go for the close If your client or customer is lookingaway, you need to change your pitch and find another pitch that

relates to him more Be aware of eye contact when people are

talking directly to you It's common knowledge that liars will avoiddirect eye contact, so we have seen numerous cases where liars willlook you directly in the eye So always be aware that just becausesomebody looks you directly in the eye when speaking, they still may

be hiding something

How The Eyes Will Give Away Attraction

The eyes are one of the easiest signals of body language to interpret

if you are looking for the signs of attraction These signals are

common in both males and females, but are usually more pronounced

in the female population The first signal that we are going to talkabout is pupil dilation If you are close enough to watch your

subject's pupils, you can find out a lot about how they feel about you.Pupil dilation is known to occur during attraction when the brainbegins to release different hormones If you notice your date's pupilsbegin to dilate during a date, that could be a sign of growing

attraction You also want to take into account the lightening in thesetting that you are in If the lights dim and your date's pupils expand,they are just adjusting to the new lighting

The second attraction tell, is widening of the eyes Eyes usually willwiden, and your eyebrows will raise, when you are confronted with

a positive situation Widening eyes can be seen from people who aregreeting family member or friends, or looking at cute animals

Widening eyes means that person desires what every object they arelooking at So look out for widening eyes when you first meet

somebody, as it could be a tell on if they find you attractive or not

Eye Ticks and Movements and What They Mean

Another way that you can read people's eyes, is through eye ticks andmovements Eye ticks are somewhat difficult to pick up on, due tohow quickly they occur If you find your subject is rubbing their eyes,this can mean that they are in a state of disbelief or shock It couldalso mean that they are tired and bored, so make sure you keep this inmind when you are delivering surprising news An eye shrug, orwhen the eyes roll back into the eyelids, can indicate that the person

is upset or frustrated Blinking can also be a great tell to find out ifthe person is nervous or calm If they are blinking extremely fast,chances are they are nervous and are feeling some kind of pressure.While blink rate doesn’t necessarily mean that somebody is lying, ifthey are blinking more then twenty times a minute, they may be hidingsomething An eyebrow raise is also a tell that usually indicatessomebody is acknowledging or greeting another person Shock andfear is also another tell that an eyebrow raise could indicate Thelonger the eyebrow is raised for, usually the more severe the

reaction

Chapter 4: The Head

Head and mouth movements are also body parts that you can observe

to read other people's body language Similar to posture of the body,the head can allow you to read a person's confidence level and learnmore about their personality before they begin verbal

communication Identifying certain patterns that are displayed by thehuman mouth, can lead to some insight in whether a person is beinggenuine The mouth is one of the best ways to spot somebody who islying or uncomfortable, due to their tendency to create a fake smile

Reading Head Movements

The first movement we are going to discuss, is one you probablyalready know, the head nod The head nob is universal for agreementand is easy to spot If you are in sales, a head nod will be an activeindication that you are close to a sale and should push for the close

A genuine head nod will usually be fairly quick, so because of slowcareful nods A slow nod could be fake, and you should look forother body language clues to confirm your suspicion On the otherhand, a fast head nod could indicate that the listener understands thepoint and wants you to stop talking The listener who uses the fasthead nod wants to hurry up and move onto another topic

The Position and Angle Of The Head

If your subject's head is at a balanced position, not tilting in eitherdirection, this is common body language of somebody who is

listening who has yet to form an opinion Make sure you watch whichdirection the held tilts during your conversation, as the direction willgive you an idea of the opinion they are going to form If the headbegins to tilt to either the left or right side, this is a sign that the

person is interested in what you are talking about A head tilt to theside is also considered a trust signal, and is seen when rapport isbeing built If your date leans in and tilts their head exposing theirneck, this is a sign that they trust you and feel comfortable

The tilt of the head can also be used to read if the person is in

disagreement with what you are saying A side to side head shakingusually means disagreement or frustration This one is easy to pick

up on, due to it being the universal sign of “no” If the tilt of the head

is in a downward angle, and the subject is looking at you throughtheir eyes, this is a position of disappointment or criticism Thissignal will usually come from a person in power, so this is a signalyou do not want to see from your boss If you are the speaker, andyou notice that your subject's head is tilting down, this is a signal thatthey are uninterested or bored with what you are saying Try

changing your topic and see if you can get the head to raise back tonormal position, and you will once again know you have their

attention If that person is working on a project or taking notes andtheir head is down while you are talking, this most likely means thatthey are just busy on work In order for head reads to work, you mustmake sure you have the individual's full attention

The Head And Overall Body Posture

The head is an important indicator when looking at the overall

posture and body language of the person you are studying A headheld high, will signal that the person feels superior or may hold aposition of power in regards to the status of the room This naturallyraises the chin and the person you are reading will most likely lookaround the room from a downward angle This should change oncethe person begins talking, and the head should return back to a

neutral position Raising your head high, and keeping your chin up isalso considered good posture This combined with opening yourchest up and standing straight, can give you the appearance of powerand increase the look of confidence Holding your head high andkeeping your chin up, are both techniques you should practice duringthe day

The Head And Active Listening

Reading head movements can also play a vital role in understanding

if the person you are talking to is actually listening to what you aresaying Watching the person's head tilt during conversation, will giveyou clues of what they are thinking This combined with watchingwhich direction their eyes move, can give you an idea of whetherthey are recollecting data or envisioning themselves in the

environment you are talking about Watching the head and eyes,

combined with the mouth, which we are going to talk about next, willallow you to double check signals and make sure you are correct inyour evaluation
