Happy New Year!

Trang 2

My favorite family videos are the ones that show my daughter laughing uncontrollably or ahhing with amazement at

something unexpected And I’m always looking for stories and activities for her that will inspire those kinds of reactions

As a parent, I know that early childhood is full of learning and discovery Every moment presents the opportunity to make a memory, be silly, or learn something new And we hope that this issue of Highlights High Five will offer lots of things to discover For

the readers who love a puzzling challenge, they’ll find animal astronauts in

“My First Hidden Pictures: On the Moon” (pages 10–11) If your child likes stories

and real animal facts, try “Hair Care for Your Woolly Mammoth” (pages 12–15)

Or perhaps your family wants to make a slice of “Celebration Sponge Cake”

(pages 30–31) Whether you start with crafts or Hidden Pictures, recipes or

stories, we hope that you and your family will find lots to discover this month

Thank you for making memories with High Five We’re glad you’re here!

Sincerely,

Meghan Dombrink-Green, Editor

HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE ⋆ JANUARY 2022

Hello, Baby Sister.

You’re finally here!

I’ve been waiting to meet you

for almost a year.

Wrapped in a blanket,

you rest in my lap.

I get to hold you

while you take a nap.

I’ll never trade you

for any other.

I’ll love you forever

’cause I’m your big brother!

Tex and Indi and their sister Arizona were in the living room

“Gran and Poppy only flew back to Colorado a week ago,” said Arizona, “but

I already miss them.”

“Me too,” said Tex “I’m doing the puzzle they gave me.”

“I’m drawing in the cookie book they gave me,” said Indi “Poppy and I used it

to make snickerdoodles.”

Arizona led Indi to the Measuring Wall by the back door

“We’ll put this book on your head to get it right,” she said, as Indi giggled

“Stand straight!” said Arizona, making a mark

“You’ve grown two whole inches since last summer,” said Arizona “See?”

“Wow, you’re right!” Indi smiled

“This is me standing on the

step stool to mix the batter,”

said Indi, pointing to the picture

“Poppy kept saying how much

I’ve grown, but he’s wrong If I’d

grown, I wouldn’t need to stand

on a step stool to reach the

counter!”

“Actually, you have grown

since Poppy saw you last

summer,” said Arizona “Here, I

can show you!”

Just then, their kitty Charlie came meowing along

“Look,” said Indi “Charlie wants to do it too!”

Arizona giggled as she gently measured Charlie “It

looks like everyone around here has grown!”

Second, this is an outdoor job Your woolly mammoth

eats a lot of grass, so you’ll probably find plenty in her fur There may be ice chunks and snow too

13

Trang 14

Third, she has two layers of hair: the shorter underfur and the longer outer coat The longer hairs can be braided or curled

Fourth, while your woolly mammoth’s ears and tail are shorter than the Asian or African elephant, that doesn’t mean they can’t hold a colorful bow!
