The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, established in 1925, is the lar-gest of the ten faculties of the University

It consists of the following eight depart-ments: Accounting, Business Manage-ment, Economics, School of Industrial Psychology, Logistics, Public Management and Planning, Statistics and Actuarial Sci-ence and the University of Stellenbosch Business School.

The Faculty occupies three buildings on the main campus at Stellenbosch, while the postgraduate programmes of the Business School and the School of Public Management and Planning are offered on the Bellville Park Campus Both campuses have modern librar-ies and modern technological facilitlibrar-ies The Bellville Park Campus also offers up-market accommodation

Our departments offer postgraduate

pro-grammes of the highest quality This is borne out by, for example, internationally sought-af-ter accreditations such as EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) and AMBA (As-sociation of MBAs) for the University of Stel-lenbosch Business School Our training for professional registration in specialist fields such as Accounting and Actuarial Science enjoys national and international accredita-tion by professional institutes and our stu-dents’ performance in external examinations

is proof of the quality of our programmes In a similar vein our programmes in Industrial Psy-chology and Human Resource Management are acknowledged by professional bodies In other disciplines, excellent quality of tuition is ensured by cooperation agreements; these cover matters such as the exchange of stu-dents and teaching staff, and joint research projects with internationally recognised aca-demic institutions

This profession is controlled by the

Independent Regulatory Board for

Au-ditors (IRBA), and the South African

Institute of Chartered Accountants

(SAICA) To qualify as a Chartered

Ac-countant, a candidate must pass the

Part 1 Qualifying Examination (QE) set

by SAICA and the Part 2 Public

Prac-tice Examination set by IRBA or the

Part 2 Financial Management

Exami-nation set by SAICA Candidates may

specialise in either Public Practice or

Financial Management

To gain admission to the QE, the

BAccHons degree or the

Postgradu-ate Diploma in Accounting (PDA) is

required

To gain admission to the Part 2

Pub-lic Practice Examination, a candidate

must have passed the QE, articled for

18 months at an accredited auditing

firm in public practice and

success-fully completed a preparatory course

in Public Practice with an accredited

Our modules for the BCommHons (Management Accounting) comply with the CIMA requirements Students who have obtained this BCommHons after completing a BComm (Manage-ment Accounting) degree at Stellen-bosch University are exempted from CIMA’s first two examinations and may sit for CIMA’s final examination imme-diately

Our modules for the BComm (Financial Accounting) are recognised by ACCA

Students who have obtained this BComm are exempted from ACCA’s first nine subjects (maximum exemp-tion that could be granted) and may sit for the remaining five subjects at two exam sessions

The two-year MAcc (Computer

Audit-ing) programme trains qualified

char-tered accountants as specialists in

computer auditing

The programme consists of a taught

component (compulsory lectures once

a month at the Stellenbosch Campus

Focuses on the different valuation techniques applicable to bonds,

This Department was established in

1920 and has a long tradition of re-search in macroeconomics, structural economic issues, and economic pol-icy formulation, implementation and assessment in the context of a devel-oping country

The Department offers a full-time, taught Honours programme in Eco-nomics in which candidates choose one of two broad options Those who take the General Economics option gain a specialised knowledge of eco-30

Financial Economics option is

career-oriented, preparing students for jobs

in the financial sector of the economy

The Department also offers an

Hon-ours programme in Economics and

Mathematical Statistics Covering a

specialised study not only of

econom-ics, but also of statistical inference,

analyse relationships in the economy

Building on from an honours degree,

or its equivalent, students may choose

between a research-based Master’s

programme, requiring a thesis that is

the result of independent research, or

a taught Master’s programme The

lat-ter is a full-time programme that aims

to produce competent professional

economists who can be employed

in the public and private sector

Stu-dents can opt for General Economics,

or specialise in Economics of

Educa-tion, Development Economics or in

Trade and Industrial Policy

The Master’s programme in

Eco-nomic Policy is a part-time, taught

programme Students attend lectures

at the Stellenbosch Campus twice a

year for two weeks at a time It equips

people who have not undergone

spe-cialised training in economics, but

who find themselves in careers that

require an intimate knowledge of

eco-nomic policy in all its applied fields,

with the appropriate skills in the

de-sign, implementation and assessment

of economic policy

The highest qualification offered by

the Department is a Doctorate in

Eco-nomics by way of a dissertation

Exchange agreements exist with,

among others, the Vrije University,

and the Universities of Erasmus and

of Maastricht

Industrial Psychology focuses on the

optimal development and utilisation of

human resources in the work environ-ment The Department – the first of its kind in South Africa – has developed a tradition of academic excellence and strives to present top quality gradu-ates to all sectors of the South African economy The Department would like

to see its graduates addressing the prevailing business-related people management issues in such a way that they will earn the trust, respect and appreciation of top management

The BComm (Psych) and BComm-Hons (Psych) programmes comply with the requirements of the Health Professions Council of South Af-rica (HPCSA) The postgraduate pro-grammes in Human Resource Man-agement comply with the regulations

of the South African Board of Person-nel Practice (SABPP)

Honours, Master’s and doctoral stud-ies can follow on these undergradu-ate programmes: BComm (Human Resource Management), BComm (Psych), and BA (Human Resource Management) The first two pro-grammes resort under the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and the third resorts under the Fac-ulty of Arts and Social Sciences All three programmes lead to registration

The Honours and Master’s pro-grammes in Human Resource Man-agement are presented full-time and part-time in English Students on the part-time programme visit the Stel-lenbosch Campus for 5 weeks a year (over 2 years) The postgraduate programme in Industrial Psychology (BCommHons (Psych)) is presented full-time only

Our lecturers are scientists with wide-ranging practical experience

They are recognised by the SABPP and the HPCSA, and are registered in

a variety of categories

Postgraduate Diploma in HIV/Aids Management

This programme is offered part-time online (via the Internet) and supple-mented with interactive satellite broadcasts Students attend a com-pulsory summer school of one week

in January The programme consists

of 6 modules of 20 credits each After completing the diploma students with

an average of at least 60% can apply for the MPhil programme

Ten years before it was founded in

1946, this Department, one of the old-est in the country, already presented statistics as a subject, mainly for stu-dents in the commercial sciences In this way we ended up in the Faculty

of Economic and Management Sci-ences The number of environments needing tuition in statistics is increas-ing even more rapidly In 1985 we also started offering actuarial science Presently we house the Centre for Sta-tistical Consultation; proof that we are serious about active research Fields of study

MBA The MBA curriculum aims at develop-ing students’ competencies in high-level leadership At the beginning of the programme, students undertake tests to determine their leadership profiles After they receive feedback, students embark on an individualised interactive programme which extends over the full duration of the MBA study period and is designed to achieve optimal personal leadership develop-ment After students have completed the core modules of the MBA pro-gramme, they may choose from a va-riety of elective modules or specialise

in a specific study area Certain mod-ules may be followed at foreign busi-ness schools with which the USB has exchange agreements

The MBA programme is presented in the following formats:

MBA (Full-time)*

One year of lectures during the day;

research report in the 2nd year (Eng-lish)

MBA (Part-time) Two years of lectures in the evening;

research report in the 3rd year (Eng-lish)

MBA (Modular)*

Two and a half years of block lectures (4 blocks of 8 days during each of the first two years, and 2 blocks of 8 days during the third year: totalling

10 blocks); research report in the 3rd year Two programmes to choose from (bilingual: English and Afrikaans; or English)

Master’s in Development Finance*

This Master’s programme runs over one year full-time (with daily lectures)

or over two years modular (with five lecture blocks of two weeks each in this period) Core modules include quantitative methods, microfinance, project finance, corporate gover-nance, political and economic dimen-sions of development in Africa, and small-scale enterprise development

Master’s in Coaching*

This Master’s programme is offered by the USB in conjunction with Middlesex University in the UK

MPhil in Futures Studies*

This Master’s programme is presented

by the Institute for Futures Research

in cooperation with the USB The pro-gramme, which runs for two years, is presented electronically by way of in-teractive telematic education

PhD in Business Management and Administration*
