The Path to Innovative Leadership

built on timely and relevant capabilities

The goal of the Berkeley MBA Program is to develop you

as an innovative leader and teach you fundamental

business concepts We define innovative leadership as the

ability to put new ideas into action in every corner and

every function of an organization, and to do so responsibly

This concept is based on a set of specific capabilities that

are valued in today’s marketplace by employers You gain

the knowledge to become a leader who defines what’s

next—for our markets and for our societies Berkeley-Haas

is uniquely positioned to deliver such leaders.

A General Management Foundation

Your Haas education is anchored in the fundamentals of general

management, including the latest theories of and best practices

in business—from accounting and finance to marketing and

strategy You learn to lead and manage an enterprise as a whole

The rigorous curriculum provides you with a basic framework

of qualitative, quantitative, analytical, strategic, and problem

solving skills You not only gain knowledge about best business

practices, but also learn about the fundamental principles

behind them—the “how” and the “why.”

A Connected Leadership Curriculum Innovative leadership is a connecting theme that runs through the entire Berkeley MBA Program—in both the required (core) and elective portions of the curriculum The process starts with the careful selection of Berkeley MBA students, who have demonstrated leadership and exemplify the school’s defining principles In the core, you begin to learn the capabilities of the innovative leader, such as the skills to define opportunities

For example, the Problem Finding, Problem Solving course teaches you several modes of thinking—such as framing problems—in order to find and solve difficult problems The courses Leading People and Leadership Communications teach specific motivational skills, such as influencing others without having direct authority over them A required experiential learning course gives you practice in solving real-world business problems and emphasizes innovative leader capabilities The list

of experiential options ranges from applied innovation projects with major firms to global consulting opportunities

A Supportive Culture and Environment

A unique aspect of the Berkeley MBA leadership approach is the conscious use of the Haas School culture to shape how and what you learn The school recently codified its culture into four defining principles: Question the Status Quo, Confidence Without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself

The defining principles are heavily influenced by the school’s location in the San Francisco Bay Area—the world’s epicenter for innovation and entrepreneurship And they are shaped by the culture of UC Berkeley, a world-class research generator with a legendary atmosphere of fresh thinking

“Problem Finding, Problem Solving aims to  provide some basic tools for innovative  thinking, enhancing students’ ability to  identify assumptions, learn through direct  observation, synthesize meaningful insights  from complex data, generate a wide range

of ideas, and tell inspiring stories to engage  others and get feedback.”

Sara L. Beckman

Sr Lecturer and Winner, University of California Distinguished Teaching Award, 2001

Guided by four defining principles, the distinctive

Berkeley-Haas culture is integral to shaping its MBA

students as they learn how to be innovative leaders

Berkeley-Haas students question the status quo, project

confidence without attitude, think beyond themselves,

and act as students always These attributes combine to

create an environment conducive to teamwork,

collaboration, and involvement Students are members of

a close-knit, supportive peer network that draws on both

shared experiences and a diversity of ideas and

backgrounds to build bonds that last a lifetime.

A Collaborative Culture

cultivates a unique, dynamic community

A Diversity of Experiences

Among the school’s greatest assets is the community of

fellow students, who form a lifetime network of friends and

professional contacts The relatively small size of the MBA

program (only 240 students enroll in each entering class)

encourages students to get to know all members of their

class Students represent a wide range of ethnic backgrounds,

religious affiliations, and sexual orientations About a third of the

students are from outside the United States, representing almost

40 countries

Involvement in a Dynamic Community

The diverse and outgoing nature of the Berkeley-Haas culture translates to a vibrant, thriving community of fellow students, alumni, faculty, and staff From networking mixers to annual conferences, guest speakers to intramural sports competitions, there’s always something happening here At Haas, virtually everyone gets involved in clubs and community service, managing major conferences, participating in international case competitions, and organizing ski trips to nearby Sierra Nevada resorts

Going Above and Beyond

UC Berkeley has a long tradition of social responsibility and a commitment to creating a better world In keeping with that spirit, Berkeley MBA students get involved to make a difference

Almost the entire MBA class participates during the year in one of the many fun events that are a part of the Challenge for Charity—talent shows, charity auctions, and sports competitions that help raise money for the Special Olympics and other organizations Many Berkeley MBA students also volunteer as mentors for disadvantaged high school students through the Young Entrepreneurs at Haas (YEAH) program

Confidence Without Attitude

“The interview process for consulting  internships is arduous, and the  competition is fierce. But even here, the  defining principle Confidence Without Attitude won out. We had informal Friday  prep sessions where we reviewed case  studies, shared resources and coached  each other. We helped every one of us be

as prepared as possible.”

David Felts, MBA 13 Internship: Boston Consulting Group, San Francisco, California

Previous degree: B.S., Finance, Grove City College, Brove City, Pennsylvania

Job prior to Haas: Manager, Novant Health, Charlotte, North Carolina

Students Always

“Being Students Always means being  open to new information and being willing

to admit you don’t know everything.

Sometimes having a good question is  better than having a good answer.”

Alison Brock, MBA 13

Internship: American Express, New York, New York

Previous degree: B.A., Journalism, Howard University, Washington, D.C

Job prior to Haas: Consumer Products Specialist, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia

Beyond Yourself

“There is a real generosity among my  classmates. We all understand that  success is not just for the individual, but  for the impact we can have on others.

In my Business Strategies for Emerging  Markets class, we put together  business plans that would also have  social impact in developing countries.  This is an example of Beyond Yourself.”

Luis López, MBA 12

Associate Consultant, McKinsey and  Company, Bogotá, Colombia  Internship: McKinsey and Company, Bogotá, Colombia

Previous degree: B.S., Industrial Engineering, Universidade de los Andes, Colombia

Job prior to Haas: Project Manager, Florela, Tocancipá, Colombia

Question the Status Quo

“Professor Don Moore’s Leading People  course shed so much light on the  biases we all have—how to recognize  and deal with them. I now question

my assumptions and decision-making  behavior in new ways. That is one way  that I am Questioning the Status Quo.”

Vannie Shu, MBA 12

Associate Marketing Manager, The  Clorox Company, Oakland, California Internship: Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, Ohio

Previous degree: B.A., Communication Studies and Economics, University of California, Los Angeles

Job prior to Haas: Associate Account Planner, Google, Inc., Mountain View, California

Berkeley-Haas students have the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of formal and informal clubs and activities For example, members of the Haas MBA rugby team, including co-captains Hans Lintermans and Blake Holland, both MBA 12 (pictured left), participated

in the Rugby World Championship held at Duke University last spring

The rugby team is just one of more than 45 current student clubs and organizations led by Berkeley-Haas graduate students

Since its founding in 1868, UC Berkeley has grown with the rapidly expanding population of California and has responded to the educational needs of the developing state By the 1930s, research

at UC Berkeley burgeoned in nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology, leading to the development of the first cyclotron, the isolation of the human polio virus, and the discovery of all the artificial elements heavier than uranium, including Berkelium and Californium Twenty-one members of the UC Berkeley faculty have been awarded Nobel prizes for these and subsequent achievements in science, literature, and economics In 2011, the Times of London ranked UC Berkeley the 4th best university in the world The National Research Council in 2010 awarded UC Berkeley the largest number of high-ranked graduate programs

in the US for the third decade in a row—of the 52 programs assessed, 48 were in the top 10 in their categories
