be able to understand how management and service make a positive and successfuldifference to a junior level enterprise

Microsoft is a multinational American technology company with headquarters in Redmond,Washington, D.C It develops, produces and sells computer software and hardware.Microsoft's famous invention that brought technology to a new era is Microsoft Windows.Bill Gates is Microsoft's ex-CEO and is renowned for his creativity and being one of therichest people in the world He is also renowned for his style of leadership–hierarchical(autocratic) However, high-ranking businessmen like Bill Gates often show more than just

a single style of leadership

LO1: Differentiate between the role of a leader and the function of a manager

P1 Define and compare the different roles and characteristics of a leader and a manager

1.1 Define of Manager and Leader

In a company, manager and leader are very important and also has their own job to do.People has created image of leader is a kind person, who will encourage every worker toenhance their productivity and have a mighty brain While manager is created of grumpy, hard to cooperate and always see weakness of their employees It is “generation 4.0” which

we need to understand what kind of work that leader and manager would responsible.(DuBrin 2012)

*Define of Manager

For manager, the define of manager that close to us and popular is the person whoresponsible for performance of a part of company In some small companies or hospitalitydepartment, manager also is a boss, which mean he or she has the power to hire, fire, discipline, do performance appraisals, and monitor attendance In large and Multi-nationCorporation like Microsoft, there exists a system of rank for manager; for more specific,

Trang 24

there are Top-level managers, Middle-level managers, First-levelmanagers and the last one: Individual contributors (Operatives and Specialists) (DuBrin2012)

At first, we'd learn about top-level executives The Board of Directors may include CEO(Chief Executive Officer), CFO (Chief Financial Officer), CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) The Vice President could also be a top-level manager These executives are responsible forthe company's shift, plan, agenda and direction In fact, this position of manager plays animportant role in the utilization of external resources Top-level executives are responsible

to clients and the general public Satya Nadella is the new CEO to succeed Steve Ballmer, the Chairman of Microsoft Third, middle-level executives As noted above, middle-levelmanagers are under the influence of top-level managers We can be directors, companyexecutives, branch managers, department managers Whereas top-level managers are like

a house supervisor, the middle-level manager seems to be a housekeeper who wouldfollow top-level management direction and direct subordinates to accomplish the goal thatthey set up We have some other functions: the connection between executive and first-level managers by performing most of the management tasks within the firm; the design of

an efficient community and intergroup work system; the design of a reward system; Thenext level of executives is the first level boss This level of manager is the person we oftencall "Manager" when we have trouble in a place like a restaurant or hotel The first floorboss may be: the supervisor of the newspaper operators; the manager of the dining room;the repair supervisor; and the manager of the retail store

Trang 25

*Define of Leader

According to DuBrin, leader is the people who will encourage their subordinates will and confident to do their tasks instead of being serious and obey therules like old-fashioned manager Leader is also hold position called “manager” but thereare many reasons that we need to know the different between manager and leader

(DuBrin 2012)

Trang 26

At first, leader is differing from manager because of the theory of

“leadership” Leadership is a function which is important at all department and level ofmanager There is an opinion that “rules are based on right and humanity”; and it also take

an important part in formulation plans and policies from Top-level managers In the middleand level, it is required to interpretation and done plans and works that Top-level managershad given Secondly, there are many different between how leader and managers use theirpower and authority Leader uses power and authority to influence their employee to dothings; power means the ability or potential to influence decision and control resources.Authority is the formal right to get people to do things or the formal right to controlresources In charge of being a leader, they have 8 tactics to use their influence Leading

by example: the leader uses their image as a positive model or desire behaviour for theirsubordinates to follow Leading by values: the leaders influence their employee by speakingand show values that guide the behaviour of others Assertiveness is about how leadersfeel in their demands The others way that leader can use to influences their people are:Rationality, Ingratiation,

Exchange, Coalition, Joking and kidding People who is successful and called “leader” oftenhave these characteristics and traits: drive and passion; power motive; self-confident andcombined with humility; trustworthiness and honesty; good intellectual ability, knowledgeand technical competence; (DuBrin 2012)

1.2 Discuss the difference management and leadership style

*Management style

Trang 27

There are various style of management nowadays But there are 4 types

of management that has been using over decades and centuries: Participative theories,Persuasive, Autocratic and Democratic There are assumptions that if people involve intodecisionmaking, people would understand more what they are doing and they do as it istheir works Moreover, people are less competitive and have chances to help each other to

do their goals After a period, Participative theories had been divided into 2 styles: Lewin’sstyle and Likert’s style of Leadership For more specific about Lewin’s style, he and hiscolleagues did an experiment and found out 3 styles : Autocratic, Democratic andLaissezFaire As I mentioned above, Bill Gates has been using Autocratic style – whichmeans he makes decision himself without any other references; depend too much on theleader; decrease motivation of subordinates After realize the weakness of Autocratic, leader began using Democratic style – where subordinates and employees can give theiropinions to their leader This style has more society component than Autocratic style;because this style has the process of consultation before making decision; or they canproof that their opinion and ideal are right instead of making decision alone (DuBrin 2012)

Trang 28

it can result in the loss of productivity of the organization as theemployees will be not under any pressure

Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Walt Disney are the outstanding image for leadership withdifferent style of leadership With Bill Clinton, he uses style of Charismatic leadership, which means he uses charm to get the admiration for the followers, shows concern for theirpeople and looks after people’s need Or with Walt Disney, his style is Transformationalleadership, which concerns on motivates and empower his followers

To know more specific about style of leader, we must know its theory about common style

of leadership include transactional leadership and transformational leadership According toBusiness dictionary, transaction is the act of trading (or transacting) in and between group(when we are doing commercial activities) As its theory, we can infer that transactionalleadership is a style of leadership that the leader use both reward and punishment on theirsubordinates to enhance compliances Transactional leadership was introduced to world in

1947 by Max Weber; moreover, it was developing in 1981 by Bernard M Bass (anAmerican scholar in the fields of leadership studies and organizational behaviour) Thisstyle of leadership focuses on the basic management process of controlling, organizing, and short term planning Transactional leadership is often uses by manager because of itscharacteristic: it focuses on short-term goals; support laws and rules ompliance; peoplewith style of Transactional leadership would like to make the things right and not flexible; (DuBrin 2012)
